Substance-induced psychosis is one of the most critical situations substance use counselors must recognize.

It happens when drugs trigger hallucinations, paranoia, delusions, or disorganized thinking. Common causes include stimulants like methamphetamine and co***ne, hallucinogens, high-potency THC, alcohol withdrawal, and other substances.

These symptoms can easily be mistaken for schizophrenia or other psychiatric disorders.
When counselors miss the signs, clients may be misdiagnosed, improperly medicated, and pushed out of treatment.
But when you recognize it early, you can:

• Ensure client safety
• Document accurately
• Refer appropriately
• Prevent long-term harm

This is a core responsibility of every CASAC, CADC, and CAC professional.
