Get out & vote!! Then come see Pau Pescador’s “The body becomes space…” a video artwork consisting of filmed and found media as well as short text segments that illuminates the artist’s lived experience attempting to move through the world at a moment when extensive laws are being written to eliminate the rights of trans people in the United States. A wide-range of content including close-up blurred found footage, light cascading into the artist’s domestic space as well as series of narrative vignettes shot on Polaroid film. Each Polaroid consists of a still life shot within Pescador’s personal space and made with masks and toys gathered from the artist’s studio. The Polaroids were filmed in groceries stores, streets, hardware stores, parks, etc and left within these spaces. The placement of the artist’s private space into the public is reminiscent of Felix Gonzalez-Torres, “Untitled” (Billboard of an empty bed), 1993, in which Gonzalez-Torres placed images of his empty bed on 24 billboards throughout Manhattan at the height of the AIDS crisis. Pescador’s Polaroid interventions are more ephemeral and invisible, the video does not say what becomes of these photographs, leaving this to the viewer to imagine.

“Amor Prohibido” titles a series of Polaroid self-portraits of Pau S. Pescador taken within her own home. Translated in English as “the forbidden love,” the phrase has been most famously used in the title of the 1994 eponymous Selena pop song. Here, Pescador makes a play of words while reflecting upon their Latine trans identity under the second Trump presidency. This body of work is a continuation of the artist’s investment in the photographic medium and its relationship to performance, and the potential for the corresponding photographic document. Polaroids have been long used within photographic history due to the immediacy of the medium (from April Dawn Alison to Andy Warhol), allowing for a moment to be transcribed into an instantaneous photographic object.

Here’s a portrait of Pau Pescador by Daniel Ingroff. The imaginary landscape in Hemispheres (2021) is an amalgamation of iPhone photos taken during walks in the San Gabriel Mountains and in Griffith Park. There is a sense that each painting serves as a portrait of its subject, at times close friends of the artist, but also as an introspective examination of psychological or emotional states.

Fugitive Signals—Corinne Jones

Fugitive Signals, a solo exhibition by Corinne Jones, consists of a new body of paintings made at Crosstown Arts Residency, and projected photographs of stairs found in Memphis. The ephemeral stairs ground the walls in a pictorial sense while the paintings appear to be shrouded in a balmy atmosphere that signifies the sky. Together, the stairs and the paintings are connected by the concept of erasure. The stairs are evidence of absence. They lead to plateaus where buildings used to stand. The erasure is absolute, but the remnant stairs are vestiges of histories hidden in plain sight. They persistently indicate what once was. The paintings are versicolor abstractions patterned together and clouded, obscured, etched, and erased. They depict streaming banners covered in chevron motifs. The banners present a static presence that continuously beckons, a fixed state of transience. The chevron, a symbol of strength and protection, is repeated with both conviction and irreverence. Repetition is the artist’s way of rewriting and over-writing existing conditions that are rooted in patriarchal systems. These interventions become a tool of subversion. The repeated gestures strip the motifs of their original authority and imbues them with new potentials. The collective whole of Fugitive Signals is a proposition to make the invisible visible in the hope of forming new collective memories.

The photo about is from the “Amor Prohibido” series - Polaroid self-portraits of Pescador taken within her own home. The uncertainty of the Polaroid chemical process, as well as the playful imagery in Pescador’s images, produces a humorous juxtaposition as the artist poses alongside masks and puppets, reinforcing the physicality of the Polaroid object as a witness to the privacy as well as transformative of the artist’s body in each image.
