The Montefiore Einstein Center for Bioethics is home to Montefiore's Clinical Ethics Consultation Service, Institutional Bioethics Committee, Certificate in Bioethics and Medical Humanities, M.S. Welcome to Einstein Cardozo Bioethics - fostering ethical practices in patient care, research and health policy. This collaboration between Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Cardozo Law builds upon the long history and rich clinical experience of the Montefiore Einstein bioethics consultation service. Our unique program integrates scholarship in medicine, law and the humanities, and includes a strong narrative focus to expand students' understanding of complex bioethical issues. With courses such as Consultation Skills, Reproductive Ethics, Empathy, and Policy Writing, our program provides personal enrichment while equipping you with the skills you need to navigate the nuances of policy and regulation in a changing healthcare environment. We accept applications from a diverse array of professionals, including physicians, lawyers, nurses, clergy and recent college graduates, who seek a deeper understanding of how bioethics can help them make a difference in patients' lives.

Dr. Kolby Johnson of NYU Langone Health was among the first time presenters at this year's annual ASBH meeting in Indianapolis. Dr. Johnson's paper, "When Death Is Disputed: Ethical Responses to Brain Death Objections," was developed as part of her participation in Montefiore Health System and Albert Einstein College of Medicine‘s Advanced Certificate in Bioethics and Medical Humanities program that she completed in 2026. She collaborated with MECB faculty member and Assistant Director for Graduate Education, Dr. Patrick Herron.

Congrats to Albert Einstein College of Medicine medical student Thomas Scharfenberger, who was lead author and presenter for "When Medical Necessity Is Not Enough: Prosthetic Coverage and the Ethics of Physical Flourishing." Tom developed this work in collaboration with fellow Einstein students and faculty in Einstein’s Service Learning curriculum and as part of Tom's participation in Montefiore Health System and MECB's Advanced Certificate in Bioethics and Medical Humanities program.

Congratulations to Arielle Mueller, one of our medical students at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, who presented at ASBH on the topic of "Clinician Insurance Refusal and Ethical Responsibilities in the Context of the Youth Mental Health Crisis." Ms. Mueller graduated from the Univ of Penn’s Master of Bioethics program prior to enrolling at Einstein. She is a member of Einstein's Bioethics Interest Group and she has participated in Montefiore Health System’s Center for Bioethics programs.

We greatly appreciate all the time and effort that you volunteered this past year.

Established in 2015 by the UNESCO Chair in Bioethics and Human Rights, now the International Chair in Bioethics, and first celebrated in 2016, the day commemorates UNESCO’s adoption of the Universal Declaration on Bioethics and Human Rights on October 19, 2005. This landmark declaration places human dignity, human rights, and ethical responsibility at the center of medicine, research, and scientific progress.

World Bioethics Day invites all of us to consider how our decisions affect the lives and well-being of others. Montefiore Health System and Albert Einstein College of Medicine recognizes this by reaffirming the importance of listening to patients and families, respecting diverse perspectives, and advancing dignity, compassion, and justice in health care.
