Albion Fellows Bacon Center is aware of the recent developments surrounding allegations of sexual violence involving fraternity students at Cornell University and the decision by the Tompkins County District Attorney to reopen the 2024 case.

While the legal process continues, this situation brings renewed attention to something we see every day in our work: how we respond when someone discloses sexual violence matters.

There is no single “right” way for a survivor to respond after experiencing sexual violence. Survivors deserve to be met with dignity, compassion, and trauma-informed, survivor-centered support no matter the direction in their journey they determine comes next.

It is also important to recognize that the decision to pursue criminal charges is not for survivors to make alone. Those decisions are made by law enforcement and prosecutors. What survivors should have is a voice in their own care, access to information about their options, and support throughout the process.

This is especially important in spaces where young people live, learn, and build relationships. Colleges and universities have an important role in continuing to educate students about consent, healthy relationships, and sexual violence, while creating environments where harmful behavior is addressed and accountability is taken seriously.

Through our Family & Youth Prevention Advocates, Albion works alongside colleges and universities to support student survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence, stalking, and other forms of interpersonal violence.

To every student and survivor in our community: You deserve to be heard. You deserve to feel safe. You deserve support.
