Do you know why we celebrate Labor Day?

In the United States, we celebrate Labor Day to honor the contributions and achievements of American workers.

It began during the labor movement of the late 1800s, when many workers faced long hours, low wages, and unsafe working conditions. Labor unions pushed for better treatment, including reasonable working hours and safer workplaces.

The first Labor Day celebration was held in New York City on September 5, 1882. In 1894, Labor Day became a federal holiday. Today, it is celebrated on the first Monday in September.

So, at its heart, Labor Day is a day to recognize workers and the role they have played in building and strengthening the country. It also became an unofficial marker of the end of summer, with many people enjoying the long weekend.

AND THAT'S WHY AVERY WELLNESS WILL BE CLOSED ON MONDAY SEPTEMBER 7, 2026.
WE WILL RESUME REGULAR BUSINESS HOURS ON TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 8, 2026.

🚨 SCAM ALERT: Medicare & Insurance Scam Calls Are Increasing! 🚨

We’ve been getting a LOT of suspicious calls lately, and we’re concerned these scammers may be targeting our community, too.

Some are asking about funeral insurance. Others are claiming there is a problem with your Medicare coverage or benefits.

And there’s another one to watch for:

📞 “Can you hear me?”

If an unexpected caller starts with “Can you hear me?” or something similar, DON’T answer with “yes.” Simply hang up.

Scammers have used this tactic to get people talking and keep them on the line. The FTC has specifically documented robocalling operations using questions like “Can you hear me okay?” as part of their scam/sales calls. (Federal Trade Commission)

🚩 OTHER BIG RED FLAGS:

❌ “Your Medicare is at risk.”

❌ “Your benefits are about to be canceled.”

❌ “We need to verify your Medicare number.”

❌ “You need a new Medicare card.”

❌ “There is a problem with your Medicare account.”

❌ They ask for your Medicare number, Social Security number, date of birth, bank information, credit card number, or a verification code.

❌ They pressure you to make a decision RIGHT NOW.

❌ They tell you to stay on the phone or transfer you to another “department.”

❌ The caller ID says “Medicare,” “Insurance,” or another official-sounding name. Caller ID can be faked.

🛑 THE BEST RESPONSE?

HANG UP.

You don’t have to be polite. You don’t have to explain yourself. And you don’t have to stay on the phone to find out whether it’s legitimate.

Do NOT give them any personal information.

If you’re concerned that the call might actually be legitimate, you make the call.

📞 Medicare: 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227)

Use the number on your official Medicare card or contact the organization directly using a number you already know is legitimate.

❤️ Remember: If someone unexpectedly calls you and wants personal information, money, or immediate action, STOP and verify before doing anything.

Scammers can sound extremely convincing—and they may already know your name, address, or other basic information. That does NOT mean they’re legitimate.

Please share this post with your parents, grandparents, neighbors, and anyone you know who may be targeted by these calls.

A few seconds of skepticism can save someone a whole lot of trouble. ❤️

You can also join the National Do Not Call Registry to limit these calls, but callers can still get through so please stay vigilant.

(I blessed one out today, not that it does any good. We will not tolerate people taking advantage of people in our community.)

Register your phone number to report stop or block unwanted, annoying, telemarketing, spam calls, robocalls to the FTC

We’re busy, busy in the office, and our goal is always to answer every phone call as it comes in. However, sometimes that just isn’t possible!

Please know that we faithfully check our voicemails throughout the day and return missed calls as quickly as we can. 📞

If you reach our voicemail, please leave us a message and we’ll get back to you as soon as possible. There’s no need to call multiple times without leaving a message—your voicemail lets us know you need a call back, and we will return your call as soon as we can.

Thank you for your patience and understanding! ❤️
