As the region’s first Magnet hospital, Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, a 525-bed tertiary care facility, is home to the area's only Level I Trauma Center, burn trauma unit and nationally ranked heart program at Sentara Heart Hospital. In addition to a first-rate heart program, the hospital is home to Nightingale Regional Air Ambulance and several dedicated facilities and specialized services including a nationally ranked ENT program supported by the skilled physicians at EVMS Medical Group.

For more than 25 years, our facilities team has turned the walkover connecting the staff parking garage to the hospital into a Halloween experience that employees eagerly anticipate each fall.

This year's display features more than 20 animatronics, live actors, fog, spooky music, strobe lights, and other Halloween surprises. Facility team members say the tradition is all about boosting morale and showing appreciation for colleagues.

While many staff members look forward to the thrills, an alternate entrance is available for those who prefer a less spooky route to and from the hospital.

What started as a simply gesture of appreciate has become a beloved tradition that brings smiles, laughter, and a sense of community to the team each Halloween season.

The Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) team knows how to keep the energy up! While they’re always focused on providing expert care and helping patients recover safely after surgery, they also know the importance of sharing a few laughs and having fun together.

“She loves what she does, and it shows.” 🌼

That’s how one patient described the care they received from Catherine Szczepankiewicz, BSN, who was recently honored with a DAISY Award.

During an extended hospital stay, Catherine became someone the patient could trust to listen, answer questions, and provide reassurance when things felt overwhelming. Even while balancing the needs of a busy unit, she took the time to explain each step of care and advocate for her patient, even catching an issue with an insurance pre-authorization.

Another nomination described the same compassion while Catherine cared for their mother: "She treats her patients as a person. She takes the time to listen to her patients and is sensitive to their needs."

Congratulations, Catherine, and thank you for making your patients feel heard, supported and cared for when they need it most. 💛

Our Spiritual Care Department plays a vital role in caring for the whole person: body, mind, and spirit. Our chaplains are professionally trained and board-certified spiritual care providers who meet patients, families, and staff right where they are, offering support in moments of grief, moral distress, and life-changing decisions.

Beyond bedside presence, chaplains are an integral part of the care team. They help support nurses and providers by responding to consults for emotional and spiritual needs, helping ease time demands so clinical staff can stay focused on patient care.

We’re proud to spotlight the Spiritual Care department for the meaningful, often unseen work they do every day across our hospital community. 💙

The Transport Team keeps patients moving with care, teamwork, and a whole lot of heart 💙 And when there’s a little dancing involved? Even better.

“If you dance, I’ll dance. If you don’t, I’ll dance anyway” feels pretty fitting for a team that works together to make each patient’s journey a little smoother, bringing positivity, compassion, and energy everywhere they go.

At 103 years old, Katherine Xefteris is still enjoying the things she loves most: spending time with family, attending church, solving puzzles, dining out, and making memories with loved ones.

When worsening heart failure symptoms began affecting her daily life, Katherine and her family worked closely with Dr. Deepak Talreja and the team at Sentara Heart Hospital to find a solution that would help her continue living life on her own terms. At age 102, she underwent a minimally invasive heart procedure and experienced an almost immediate improvement in her quality of life. Just four days later, she was out to lunch with her family. ❤️

Her story is a reminder that healthcare is not just about treating a condition. It's about helping people continue doing the things that bring them joy and purpose.

Now, "Team Xefteris" is celebrating not only a successful outcome, but Katherine's 103rd birthday and the remarkable life she continues to live. 💙
