Tonight, Sentara Norfolk General Hospital shines bright in red to commemorate Sickle Cell Awareness Day and honor the strength, resilience, and courage of individuals and families affected by sickle cell disease.

Observed each year on June 19, Sickle Cell Awareness Day helps raise awareness, promote education, and encourage support for those living with this lifelong condition. By lighting our hospital in red, we stand in solidarity with patients, caregivers, advocates, and healthcare professionals working to improve outcomes and advance research.

Closing care gaps one innovation at a time.

We’re proud to bring the first and only FDA-approved minimally invasive treatment for severe aortic regurgitation to Virginia!

Designed specifically for high-risk patients unable to withstand major heart surgery, the Trilogy valve offers another option for heart patients in our community.

Sentara Heart Hospital first participated in the national clinical trial, and now we’re happy to share that our Structural Heart Team has successfully performed the first two commercial cases in the state.

Every healthcare worker deserves to feel safe at work.

Today, our colleagues joined Governor of Virginia Abigail Spanberger at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital to celebrate the passage of the Protect Healthcare Workers Act. The new law strengthens protections for healthcare workers by making it illegal to bring weapons inside hospitals and emergency departments.

Since 2022, Sentara security teams have intercepted more than 15,600 weapons at our hospitals. As incidents of workplace violence continue to impact healthcare workers nationwide, Sentara has spent years championing this legislation to help create safer environments for the colleagues who care for our communities every day, as well as our patients and visitors.

"Sentara and other hospital systems have had weapon-free policies for years. But this legislation gives those policies the force of law,” said Dennis Matheis, president and CEO of Sentara Health. “Our goal has always been to protect our patients, visitors and colleagues from violence in hospitals across Virginia.”

Dave and Sarah Hummel were spending a quiet evening together at home. But just moments after falling asleep, Sarah realized something was terribly wrong. Dave was unresponsive and struggling to breathe.

As Sarah called 911, their sons jumped into action and began performing CPR. Then, in a moment Sarah says she'll never forget, she ran barefoot across the street late at night to get help from a neighbor who happened to be a surgeon. Together, their quick thinking helped save Dave's life after sudden cardiac arrest.

Dave was transported to Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital before being transferred to Sentara Heart Hospital at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, where doctors discovered he had experienced ventricular fibrillation, a dangerous electrical abnormality in the heart.

Today, Dave is not only recovering, but sharing his story in hopes that others will pay attention to their health before it's too late.❤️

Today’s match up: your brain vs. the leading causes of stroke 🥊🧠
High blood pressure is the number one cause of strokes, followed by diabetes and high cholesterol.

The good news is most strokes are preventable. When you control your blood pressure, manage your cholesterol, keep your blood sugar in check, and know the warning signs – you’re giving your brain the best fighting chance.

Happy International Nurses Day! 💙

One of the fun traditions we’ve celebrated during Nurses Week is our “Find Florence Nightingale” scavenger hunt! A Florence Nightingale cutout is hidden somewhere around the hospital, and our nursing staff sets out to find her.

Teams have gotten incredibly creative once they discover her. It’s been such a fun way to bring a little extra energy to the day and night shifts.

Thank you to all of our amazing nurses for the compassion, dedication, and care you show every single day. We appreciate you not just this week, but all year long! 👏🩺
