The Lillian Lodge Kopenhaver Center for the Advancement of Women in Communication was established in 2012 by Dean Emeritus and Professor Dr. Lillian Lodge Kopenhaver as a pioneering site for the advancement of women in the field of communication -- a unique programming distinction at FIU. The Center's mission is to foster and advance the academic and professional growth of women by supporting the

next generation of professionals and giving them the impetus to take on challenges and to pursue leadership positions in the communication industry. The Center will engage females in a series of workshops, lectures, advisory boards, panel discussions and other activities, to further prepare them for successful communication careers - encouraging them to be future influencers and distinguished leaders of the profession.

Congratulations to Dr. Jennifer R. Henrichsen of Washington State University, recipient of the 2026 Lillian Lodge Kopenhaver Early Career Woman Scholar Award, presented with the AEJMC Commission on the Status of Women.

This honor recognizes an early-career woman scholar whose research, leadership, and promise are advancing communication, journalism, and higher education.

Dr. Henrichsen is an Assistant Professor at Washington State University’s Edward R. Murrow College of Communication and an affiliated fellow with Yale Law School and the University of Pennsylvania. A former Fulbright Research Scholar, she has authored more than 30 publications, including three books and 14 peer-reviewed journal articles.

Her research explores the risks and structural challenges shaping journalism and democracy. Her work has been cited by the U.S. Government and United Nations and featured by The New York Times and NPR.

She will be honored Aug. 5 during the AEJMC New Orleans Conference keynote session.

Congratulations to Bingbing Zhang of the University of Iowa on being selected as part of the inaugural class of the AEJMC/Lillian Lodge Kopenhaver Fellowship for the Empowerment of Early-Career Women in Communication Education!

Chosen among five exceptional women nationwide, Zhang joins this prestigious year-long fellowship focused on mentorship, leadership, teaching pedagogy, research and scholarly productivity, and PF&R service. An assistant professor in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication, her research explores media effects, emerging technologies, political communication, and health/science communication using both quantitative and qualitative methods. Her award-winning scholarship has been published in leading academic journals and supported by organizations including the National Science Foundation and the Arthur W. Page Center.

As part of this groundbreaking inaugural fellowship class, she will participate in programming during the 2026 AEJMC Conference in New Orleans and the 2027 AEJMC Conference in Chicago while continuing to make an impact through innovative research, teaching, and communication leadership.

Dr. Shiyu Yang has been selected as one of only five outstanding women nationwide to join the inaugural AEJMC/Lillian Lodge Kopenhaver Fellowship for the Empowerment of Early-Career Women in Communication Education.

This prestigious year-long fellowship recognizes emerging leaders in communication education and focuses on mentorship, leadership development, teaching excellence, research and scholarly productivity, and professional service.

An accomplished scholar, Dr. Yang's research examines media effects, emerging technologies, political communication, and health and science communication through innovative quantitative and qualitative approaches. Her work continues to advance the field while inspiring the next generation of communication scholars.

As a member of this historic inaugural cohort, Dr. Yang will participate in fellowship programming at the 2026 AEJMC Conference in New Orleans and the 2027 AEJMC Conference in Chicago, further strengthening her impact through research, teaching, and academic leadership.
