PLEASE JOIN US IN WELCOMING DR. ALYSSA LEVIN-SCHERZ! 🩺

Today is an exciting day at PANF as we officially welcome Alyssa Levin-Scherz, MD, FAAP on her first day at PANF!

Dr. Levin-Scherz joins us after practicing primary care pediatrics at Boston Children’s Hospital and DotHouse Health in Boston, where she cared for children and families from a wide variety of backgrounds. She is a board-certified pediatrician with special interests in behavioral health, child development, preventive care, and supporting the overall health and well-being of children and adolescents.

Dr. Levin-Scherz earned her medical degree from Tufts University School of Medicine and completed her pediatric residency at The Floating Hospital for Children at Tufts Medical Center.

Most importantly, Dr. Levin-Scherz brings a warm, compassionate, family-centered approach to pediatric care, and we are thrilled to have her joining the PANF family and providing primary care for our patients from infancy through adolescence. 🫶

Before heading to an urgent care or emergency department for a non-emergency illness, please give us the opportunity to help. Our pediatric team is available throughout the weekend and holiday for sick visits, and many common illnesses and concerns can be evaluated right here by a team that specializes in caring for children.

You will reach our weekend/holiday mailbox. Please leave a message with your child's information and the reason for your call, and our triage nurse will call you back promptly to discuss your concern and help determine the best next step, including scheduling an appointment when appropriate.

🌙 After the office closes each day, we're still here.
Our overnight nurse triage service is available throughout the night, and a PANF clinician is always on call for concerns that require additional guidance.

2026 DRIVE-THRU FLU CLINICS ARE HERE! 🚗

Flu season is approaching, and now is a great time to get your family protected! PANF will once again be offering convenient Drive-Thru Flu Vaccine Clinics at both of our locations.

📅 2026 DRIVE-THRU CLINIC DATES

📍 NORWOOD
• Saturday, September 12
• Saturday, October 10

📍 FRANKLIN
• Sunday, September 27
• Saturday, October 24

💉 WHO CAN RECEIVE THE FLU VACCINE?

Flu vaccine is available for patients ages 6 months and older who have previously received a flu vaccine without an issue.

If your child has an upcoming well visit, they can receive their flu vaccine during that appointment — there is no need to schedule a separate flu clinic appointment.

Drive-thru vaccines are available only to existing PANF patients who have scheduled an appointment. Unfortunately, we cannot make exceptions or accommodate walk-ins.

⭐ MORE CLINICS ARE COMING!

If these dates or times don't work for your family, don't worry! As additional vaccine arrives, we will continue adding in-office flu vaccine appointments and additional clinics in both Norwood and Franklin. Please continue checking our website for new availability.

Many local pharmacies also offer flu vaccination, although eligible ages vary by pharmacy. If your child receives their flu vaccine elsewhere, please ask the pharmacy to send us documentation so we can update their medical record.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 PARENTS & CAREGIVERS — YOU CAN GET VACCINATED TOO!

Protecting children from flu works best when the people around them are protected too. We strongly encourage parents and caregivers to receive their annual flu vaccine.

For your convenience, parents and caregivers may receive a flu vaccine during our drive-thru clinics while their child is being vaccinated.

Parent/Caregiver Flu Vaccine: $35
Please note that adult vaccines will not be billed to insurance. Schedule yourself along with your child and bring payment information with you.

🦠 WHY FLU VACCINATION MATTERS

Influenza is more than just a bad cold. Children with flu can develop:

• Fever and chills
• Cough and sore throat
• Headache and body aches
• Significant fatigue
• Vomiting or diarrhea, particularly in younger children
• Dehydration
• Complications such as pneumonia or worsening of underlying medical conditions

Some children can become seriously ill and require hospitalization.

The annual flu vaccine is safe and remains one of our best tools for reducing the risk of influenza and its complications.

🧼 HELP STOP THE SPREAD

Along with vaccination, families can help reduce the spread of flu by encouraging everyone to:

• Wash hands frequently with soap and water
• Cover coughs and sneezes
• Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
• Clean frequently touched surfaces
• Avoid close contact with people who are sick
• Keep children home when they are sick

🚗 PLEASE READ BEFORE YOUR DRIVE-THRU APPOINTMENT

👕 Please have children wear a loose-fitting T-shirt or tank top so we can easily access the upper arm. For infants, short pants/onesies are helpful.

💊 If your child has an EpiPen or EpiPen Jr., please bring it with you.

🐶 For everyone's safety, NO DOGS please. We love our furry friends, but we need to keep the drive-thru environment safe for our patients and staff.

Office Update for This Evening 9/1

Our offices are closed this evening for in-person appointments so that our clinical team can attend an updated BLS (Basic Life Support) for Healthcare Providers training. Keeping our team current on emergency preparedness and life-saving skills is an important part of providing safe, high-quality care to our patients.

While the offices are closed for in-person care, we are still here for you.

Our overnight nurse triage team and an on-call clinician remain available for urgent questions or concerns. Please call either of our main office numbers to be connected:

As fellow pediatricians and members of the same community, we may practice under different names, but when it comes to protecting children from vaccine-preventable diseases, we are absolutely on the same team.

🦟 West Nile Virus Update: What Parents Should Know

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health has announced a second human case of West Nile virus (WNV) in Massachusetts this season, following the first case reported last week. Both individuals were exposed in Middlesex County.

We are currently in peak mosquito season, and West Nile virus has been detected in mosquito samples across many areas of Massachusetts, including Norfolk, Middlesex, Suffolk, Bristol, Plymouth, and Worcester counties.

While most people infected with West Nile virus do not become seriously ill, now is a good time for families to take a few simple precautions to help prevent mosquito bites.

Protecting Babies & Children from Mosquito Bites

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends taking these steps to help protect children from mosquitoes:

• Use an EPA-registered insect repellent, such as one containing DEET or picaridin, and always follow the product label.

• For children, choose products containing no more than 30% DEET. The concentration determines how long the protection lasts—not how strong the repellent is.

• Oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE) and PMD should not be used in children younger than 3 years.

• Adults should apply repellent to young children and supervise older children. Never spray repellent directly onto a child's face. Instead, apply it to your hands first and then gently rub it onto the face, avoiding the eyes and mouth.

• Avoid applying repellent to children's hands, eyes, mouth, cuts, wounds, or irritated skin.

• For babies, use mosquito netting over strollers and infant carriers when they may be exposed to mosquitoes. Parents of newborns and premature infants should be especially cautious when considering repellents on their baby's skin.

• Dress children in lightweight long sleeves, long pants, socks, and closed shoes when possible to help reduce mosquito bites.

• When children come back inside, wash treated skin with soap and water and wash treated clothing before it is worn again.

☀️ Using sunscreen, too? Avoid combination sunscreen/insect-repellent products. Use separate products—apply sunscreen first and insect repellent second.

🏡Don't forget your yard!

Mosquitoes breed in standing water—even small amounts. Regularly empty water from buckets, toys, kiddie pools, flowerpots, birdbaths, and other outdoor containers, especially after it rains. Make sure window and door screens are in good repair, too.

🌅 Mosquito activity is often greatest around dusk and dawn, so consider taking extra precautions during evening and early-morning outdoor activities.

The goal isn't to keep kids inside for the rest of the summer! Enjoy the outdoors—just remember to add mosquito protection to your family's summer routine. ☀️🦟

Pregnancy, birth, and the months that follow can bring incredible changes, physically, emotionally, and mentally. While some ups and downs are expected, depression, anxiety, overwhelming worry, intrusive thoughts, or simply not feeling like yourself deserve attention and support.

📊 The numbers tell us why screening matters:

• About 1 in 7 women experience postpartum depression
• Approximately 1 in 10 women experience depression during pregnancy
• Perinatal anxiety and depression are among the most common complications associated with pregnancy and the postpartum period
• Early identification and treatment can make a meaningful difference for parents, babies, and families

At PANF, maternal mental health screening isn't about passing or failing a test.

It's about starting a conversation.
