I Witnessed Something Horrific While Driving—Here’s What I Did
About a year ago, I witnessed something horrific while I was driving.
I was scared, overwhelmed, and could feel myself starting to check out—but I still needed to stay present enough to safely get myself out of the situation.
So I kept one hand on the wheel, kept my eyes on the road, and used my free hand to gently tap underneath my nose.
For me, tapping gave me something physical to focus on. It helped me reconnect with my body, come back to the present moment, and stay focused on what I needed to do next.
I was able to safely drive away from the situation.
I hope you never find yourself in a moment like this. But if something frightening or overwhelming happens and you notice yourself feeling disconnected, remember that grounding can sometimes be very simple.
If you are driving, your first priority is always controlling your vehicle and getting to a safe place. Never do anything that takes your attention away from the road.
Once you’re safe, give yourself time to process what happened and get whatever support you need.
I love you.
