This Hispanic Heritage Month, we're proud to celebrate the voices, experiences, and cultures that make our NAMI Metro Suburban community what it is. đź’™

Today, we're highlighting Rosalina Ruiz, CRSS, who shared what her heritage means to her and how it shapes the way she shows up for others.

For Rosalina, culture is deeply connected to community. It means honoring the traditions passed down through generations, creating greater understanding and acceptance, and making sure people feel respected for who they are.

Her reflections also bring an important perspective to mental health: caring for our well-being doesn't have to begin with a diagnosis, and seeking support doesn't change or define who we are.

We're so proud to have Rosalina bringing that spirit of connection, understanding, and cultural pride to NAMI Metro Suburban.

Hispanic Heritage Month is a celebration of everything that keeps culture alive across generations. 🌎

Today, we're proud to spotlight Indigo Soto, CRSS, who shared what this month means to them and the joy they find in seeing Hispanic and Latino heritage celebrated openly and proudly.

For Indigo, that means elders passing down traditions and language, remembering where we come from, and embracing the music, food, clothing, and experiences that connect communities across Latin America.

At the heart of those reflections is a powerful sense of pride in continuing to celebrate and carry those traditions forward.

We're grateful to Indigo for sharing their perspective and proud to have their voice as part of NAMI Metro Suburban. ✨

Before the La Grange Living Room could become what it is today, someone had to believe in the vision of what it could be. đź’™

As we celebrate 10 years, we’re recognizing the generous funders who helped turn that vision into a reality.

Community Memorial Foundation, Westlake Hospital, and Healthy Communities Foundation (Arthur Foundation) were there at the beginning, providing the support that helped establish a place where people could find connection, understanding, and help when they needed it.

Ten years later, thousands of visits and countless moments of support have happened within these walls.

We are incredibly grateful to the organizations that believed in the Living Room from the start. Thank you for helping make these 10 years possible!

10 years. More than 15,000 visits. Nearly 3,000 people. More than 12,000 hours of support. And behind every number is a person. đź’™

Today, the La Grange Living Room officially turns 10!

We’re closing out our anniversary week featuring Linda, a La Grange Living Room guest who reminds us exactly why this space matters. In her own words, “I don’t know where I’d be without NAMI.”

For a decade, the La Grange Living Room has been a place where people can find support from someone who understands what they’re experiencing. Every conversation, every connection, and every visit has helped build what the Living Room is today.

Happy 10th anniversary to the La Grange Living Room, and thank you to every guest, peer, staff member, and community partner who has been part of these incredible 10 years.

Here’s to everything still ahead.

Day four of Mental Health Awareness Week brings us to Michael Kranich, CRSS, whose experience speaks to what makes the La Grange Living Room so special. đź’™

For the past three years, Michael has seen the Living Room become what many guests call a “second home.” It’s a place where people can show up as themselves, share what they’re going through, and know their voices will be heard with compassion and understanding.

As we get closer to celebrating 10 years of providing community support, Michael’s story is a reminder of what the Living Room has created in our community: a place to belong, to be heard, and to find hope.

Thank you, Michael, for building the kind of connection that reminds people they belong. Our community is better because you're in it!

On day three of Mental Health Awareness Week, we’re celebrating John Tolley, CRSS, and the powerful connection at the heart of peer support. 💙

Over five years with NAMI Metro Suburban, John has grown from a Recovery Support Specialist to a state-certified CRSS managing first and second shifts. Along the way, he has been there for guests through moments of recovery, comfort, and connection.
For John, that support goes both ways: “Being a part of someone’s recovery also supports my own.”

As we get closer to the La Grange Living Room’s 10th anniversary, we’re celebrating the people who have spent these years making sure no one has to navigate difficult moments alone.

Thank you, John, for your years of dedication to the people we serve. Your care has helped shape the Living Room into the trusted community mental health resource it is today.

Day two of Mental Health Awareness Week brings us to James LeFevour, CRSS. As the head of the Expressive Arts Group, James is another person who has helped make the La Grange Living Room what it is today. đź’™

For James, peer support is all about the relationships he has built. Over three years at the Living Room, he has shared countless impactful moments with guests and coworkers. He says the experience has made his own life better, and now he works to pass that same goodness forward to others.

As we count down to 10 years of the La Grange Living Room anniversary, we’re proud to celebrate James and the people who bring the power of peer support to life every day.

Thank you, James, for showing up with compassion day after day and for helping make the Living Room a place where everyone who walks through the door is met with warmth and understanding!

This Mental Health Awareness Week, we’re celebrating something incredibly special: 10 years of the La Grange Living Room. 💙

All week long, we’re honoring the people who have helped shape a decade of peer support, hope and connection in our community. We’re starting with Shelly Lustrup, LCSW, CEO, who helped open the La Grange Living Room ten years ago and has watched its impact grow ever since.

Thank you for your vision, leadership, and a decade of creating a space where people feel seen, supported, and never alone!

Conversations around mental health are deeply rooted in cultural values and norms. Many families choose to address difficult conversations privately, and reaching outside that circle for mental health support can feel uncomfortable.

But it doesn’t have to mean leaving your family, faith, or values behind.

Our latest blog looks at how Latino families can make room for mental health support in ways that respect the people and communities they love. It also connects families in West Suburban Cook County with free, bilingual resources available through NAMI Metro Suburban.
