Rethink. Rebuild. Rise.

The theme of the International AIDS 2026 Conference is a powerful reminder that innovation alone isn't enough—it must reach the people who need it most.

As Brazil's Minister of Health said during the opening plenary, "Innovation without access is injustice." International AIDS Conference

At GAIA Global Health, we're proud to help turn innovation into impact by expanding access to life-saving healthcare at the far end of the road in Malawi.

GAIA’s newest all-terrain ambulances – two headed to Nsanje District and one to replace the original clinic vehicle from 2008 – are ready for service, bringing lifesaving healthcare to remote communities. Over their 15-year lifespan, each vehicle could support 3,000 clinic days and 500,000 patient visits. While our medical staff are the heroes, these rugged Land Cruisers are essential partners on every journey. When Emmy lost her father and faced an uncertain future, she never gave up on her dream of becoming a midwife.

With a GAIA Global Health scholarship, Emmy completed her advanced midwifery training at Lusaka College of Nursing and Midwifery. Today, she is equipped to care for mothers and newborns, manage obstetric emergencies, and help prevent maternal deaths.

"The scholarship support really helped me to study midwifery. I gained knowledge on how to take care of pregnant mothers, antenatally, during labor, and post-delivery. I’m now competent enough to conduct deliveries and to manage obstetric emergencies; it’s all because of scholarship support. I’m able to pursue my studies freely, with nothing to worry about the resources." – Emmy

When we tell people about our work in Malawi, the first question is often simple: Where is Malawi? The next question comes just as quickly: Why Malawi?

What started as an emergency response to HIV/AIDS has become a long-term commitment to closing the gap in healthcare access.

With fuel prices in Malawi topping $14 per gallon and ongoing fuel shortages, the impact is far greater than an expensive inconvenience. GAIA has recently been recruited to transport medical emergencies to a medical facility with ICU capacity, as well as blood supplies—because the hospital’s own ambulances had no fuel.

When fuel becomes scarce, life-saving services are put at risk.

A new Devex article from the Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI), confirms our fears: global HIV services have not recovered from the major funding cuts that began in 2025. Across multiple countries, declines in HIV testing, prevention, treatment initiation, and pediatric HIV care present growing risks for people living with and vulnerable to HIV.

These findings reflect what many community-based organizations are seeing firsthand: progress against HIV is fragile. Sustained investment in testing, prevention, treatment, and linkage to care is essential to protect communities globally.
