For many in Washington it's the first day of school! I hope you and your child have an easeful day filled with connection and joy.

I wanted to offer some suggestions for after the long day away....
I know it can be tempting to ask...“How was your day?”…and get the classic, “Fine.”

Instead, try reconnecting before asking questions. When your child gets home, see if you can exude unshakable positive regard in your smile and steadiness. Maybe something like, "I'm so glad to see you!" Then, notice what they need...
A snack?
A hug?
Some quiet time to decompress?
Connection with you?

Once they’ve had a chance to settle, I suggest trying a specific question like, “Who did you sit with at lunch?” or “What was something funny that happened today?” and maybe, “Was there anything that felt tricky?”

And my personal favorite meal time connection ritual is offering everyone an opportunity to share their Rose, Thorn, Bud or we like to make it silly with High, Low, Buffalo.

These little rituals don't have to be complicated. They create regular opportunities to connect, listen, and learn what’s happening. And we want our kids and teens to keep getting those reminders and hopefully know that we're here, we're listening, and we care.

Hope you all have a lovely first day of school!

Todays reminder is that sending a note or family photo is a great way to help your child feel connected to you for their big day away.

For some children, the hardest part of starting school isn't the classroom....It's the goodbye. Ooof! I used to cry when my mom left and I remember lots of littles in my classroom needing some time to regroup after that morning good bye.

Here are a few things can help make that transition feel more predictable:

First, if you can.. try to prepare ahead. Read a back-to-school book "Kissing Hand" was always my favorite. Lay out clothes and supplies and let them have some choices with what they'll eat and wear and pack. Choose a small transition object like a "back pack friend that lives in their bag" and send a note or picture you've drawn them or with them and a family photo.

AND.... The big one... cuddle up and get to bed early. Sleep is so important right now.

And as much as you can, see if you can add a little extra predictability. It can make a big difference. Tell your child what will happen and when you'll reconnect. Maybe practice it before the school year starts. "Here's where we'll do our goodbye hug and here's where we'll do our hello hug"

For younger children, avoid sneaking away. Instead, offer a warm, confident goodbye and follow through on your plan. You might say something like, “I know it feels hard to say goodbye. Your teacher will take care of you, and I’ll be back after school. I love you.” And silly goodbyes can be a fun way to make it lighter. "See you soon raccoon"

And…If your child struggles more than usual during this transition, it doesn't mean you're doing something wrong. Big transitions can bring big feelings. Your child may simply need extra time, more connection, more felt safety, and reassurance while they adjust. And you may need those things, too. Give yourself some extra gentleness as you begin this new chapter.

And if you need support, I’m always happy to connect.

As our summer season starts to shift into fall, my suggestion today is to get outside!

Even a little time outdoors can support children’s overall well being by giving them space to move, explore, breathe, and reconnect. Running, climbing, walking, biking, and playing support physical health and coordination, while natural light and fresh air can provide a welcome break from indoor environments and support healthy sleep-wake rhythms.

Outdoor play can also help children release tension and decompress after a busy day. Sometimes a child who seems overwhelmed often needs to move their body, have some space, and reconnect with us. And spending time outside creates opportunities to step away from screens and engage in hands on, sensory, and unstructured play.
