Happy Labor Day from Niagara Frontier Search and Rescue team (NFSAR) 🧡

Today, we want to give a special thank-you to the volunteers who make search and rescue possible.

Our team dedicates countless hours to training, responding to calls, attending seminars, maintaining equipment, fundraising, supporting one another, and staying prepared for the day our community needs us. They give their time freely, often stepping away from their families, jobs, and everyday lives—sometimes at a moment’s notice—to answer the call and help bring someone home.

Search and rescue is more than a team; it’s a commitment to serving our community. Every training hour, every search, every late night, and every mile traveled makes a difference.

To our NFSAR team and other’s who gives their time and energy to this mission, thank you. 🧡

Wishing everyone a safe and Happy Labor Day!

🪵🪳🌲🌳 Help protect our forests—know the rules and keep firewood local.

⭐️Protecting your forests is so simple, it’s written in the stars⭐️

Planning a campfire this Labor Day weekend? This is your reminder to help stop invasive pests and diseases from hitching a ride to a new area by following New York State firewood regulations:
🔥 Untreated, New York-grown firewood must stay within a 50-mile radius of its source or origin
🔥 Untreated firewood may not be brought into New York from any other state
🔥 Heat-treated firewood can be transported anywhere in New York, but it must have a receipt or label that says, “New York-Approved Heat-Treated Firewood/Pest-Free”

K9 Handler Kathy and her K9 partner, Quiz, recently received notification that they have been awarded a Search Team Grant from the Search Dog Foundation! 🎉

This grant will allow Kathy and Quiz to attend additional water recovery training at CSAR 2026 in North Carolina this October, helping them continue to build their skills, knowledge, and capabilities as a search team. 🌊🐕‍🦺

We are also so grateful for organizations like the Search Dog Foundation, whose support makes opportunities like this possible for our teams. 🐾

Congratulations, Kathy & Quiz! We can’t wait to see what you accomplish next. 🧡

When we say 24/7, we mean 24/7!

At approximately 1am on Saturday, NFSAR received a request for mutual aid through Erie County MERS dispatch, and NFSAR immediately sent a water recovery K9 / handler team to assist emergency agencies on scene.

Working from a River Road Volunteer Fire Company boat, K9 Hugo and handler Kathy were able search areas that would be extremely difficult and time-consuming for divers to cover. K9 Hugo is specially trained to detect human scent that reaches the surface of the water and indicate where the scent is; K9 handler Kathy was then able to map that data in real-time and provide it to the Incident Commander and the dive team.

NFSAR is proud to assist law enforcement, fire departments, and emergency managers 24/7, in all seasons, in all weather. We receive no dedicated government funding and rely on donations, grants, and fundraising to operate. If you would like to support our search and rescue efforts, please visit nfsar.org/donate to make a donation.

Our teammate, Kathy, completed her Apprentice Instructor Program that focused on Human Remains Detection.

Her hard work and dedication have strengthened our team’s ability to better serve our community and support our fellow Search & Rescue organizations and first responder teams!

Kathy Galus and Kerrie Garges successfully completed the Apprentice Instructor Program (AIP) with a focus on Human Remains Detection this past weekend.

Thank you both for your commitment to learning, teaching, and helping strengthen the future of instruction.
