Your body keeps score even when you're not paying attention.

Disrupted sleep becomes chronic insomnia. Occasional nausea becomes constant digestive problems. That persistent cough you've been ignoring for months. The shakiness in your hands. The fact that you can't remember the last time you felt genuinely rested.

People in active addiction often stop noticing how bad they feel physically because feeling bad has become normal. The baseline shifted without you realizing it happened.

Job loss from addiction rarely happens all at once. It starts with being late twice in one week. Then calling in sick on Mondays. Then missing a deadline you would have hit easily six months ago. Your work quality slips just enough that people notice but not enough to say anything yet.

The irony is that by the time HR calls you in for the final conversation, you've often normalized the behavior enough that the termination feels unfair. But from the outside, the pattern was visible much earlier.

Research shows people with untreated substance use disorders have employment rates 15-20% lower than the general population. The gap widens the longer the addiction continues.

Don't wait for the final conversation. Call Sunflower Recovery: 844-677-1195

Living with someone's addiction keeps your nervous system in constant flight-or-fight.

You wake up anxious. You go to bed exhausted. You feel guilty for things that aren't your fault and angry about things you can't control. The stress becomes your baseline. Your body doesn't know how to relax anymore because the crisis never fully ends.

Family members of people struggling with addiction often develop their own anxiety, depression, and stress-related health problems.

Treatment that includes family support recognizes this reality. Your mental health matters too.

In 2023, illicit opioids alone cost Americans an estimated $2.7 trillion, with 10% of that going to healthcare, reduced labor productivity, and crime-related expenses.

These numbers exist because addiction is a chronic medical condition that needs medical treatment.

Addiction treatment isn't just about the person using. It's about preventing harm that ripples through generations. Early intervention matters specifically because of what these patterns show us about long-term impact.

In the days following the tornado in Hillsdale, we had the opportunity to spend time alongside first responders and volunteers working to support the community.

Our team brought food and drinks, but what stood out most was the effort happening all around us. People helping without being asked. Long days of neighbors taking care of one another.

We’re thankful to be part of a community that responds the way this one does.

A Georgetown University study tracking people with untreated addiction found annual costs averaging $43,200 per person when you factor in lost wages, healthcare, and criminal justice expenses.

For context, out-of-pocket outpatient addiction treatment averages $3,100 per year. It’s usually more like $0 once you include insurance coverage.

The math is straightforward.

Treatment costs less than continuing to use. Much less.
