Imogene (LENNOX) Johnson
March 26, 1934 – April 25, 2026
Provider. Protector. Prayer Warrior
Imogene Lennox Johnson, age 92, lived a long, vibrant, and joy‑filled life. On April 25, 2026, at 8:26 am, she peacefully went to sleep in Jesus at the Mandeville Regional Hospital. Her family rejoices that she rests safely in the arms of her Lord and Savior.
Born in Chandlers Pen, Clarendon, Jamaica, W.I., Imogene was the daughter of Cleaveland Immanuel Lennox and Eliza Reid Lennox, both of whom preceded her in death. At 21, she married the love of her life, Nathaniel “Ned” Johnson, and they shared nearly 14 beautiful years together until his passing in 1968. With strength, grace, and determination, she became both mother and father to her children, and today, they lovingly say they feel like orphans without her.
Imogene had a big personality and an even bigger heart. Her influence will continue to echo through her children, grandchildren, and great‑grandchildren for generations. True to her name, she was Imaginative, Motherly, Organized, Godly, Generous, Energetic, No‑Nonsense, and Enlightening. She carried herself with dignity, always looking her best, and taught her children the value of hard work, sacrifice, and kindness.
She loved people, loved animals, and worked tirelessly, just like her favorite animal, the donkey. Her ministry began at home, where she taught her children to complete both big and small tasks with excellence. She gave birth to 10 children, without an epidural, and poured her life into raising them: Baltimore (Kay), Oma (Bryan), Artnel (Princess), Pamella, Pauline (twins), Bunnie (Joyce), Marlene (deceased), Ezra, Natalie (Steve), and Elizabeth Christine Maharajh. She leaves behind 22 grandchildren and 23 great‑grandchildren, including twin great‑granddaughters Kabrielle and Kabriella Taylor, whom she eagerly anticipated meeting before her passing.
Her formal schooling ended at 5th class, but her wisdom far surpassed any classroom. As a girl, she loved to run, and that early strength carried into adulthood as she walked miles to provide for her family. Jamaicans would call her a “slim chic‑browning,” and she maintained her slim, elegant posture to her final days. She loved seek‑a‑word puzzles, which kept her mind sharp, and she read her Bible daily. Just days before her passing, though barely able to speak, she recited Psalm 51 from memory.
Imogene lived a life of service. She dreamed of becoming a teacher or nurse, and though she didn’t fulfill that dream personally, she proudly celebrated her daughters who did—nurses Pamella and Pauline, and teachers Natalie and Christine. Her love for healing and helping continues through her granddaughters in the medical field.
She loved church whether in Jamaica, Arkansas, New York, New Jersey, or Georgia. She sang in the choir, taught Sabbath School, served as superintendent at “Zinkie,” and was a founding member of both the May Pen SDA Church and the Palmers Cross SDA Church. She deeply appreciated the recognition service held for her in December 2025.
Though she often joked about “hating old age,” she faced it with courage, humor, and her signature no‑nonsense attitude. She was loved by many, disliked by none, and respected by all. She enjoyed traveling to the United States. So, New York was her favorite city, she never slept on a plane ride, because she was always excited to see the lights during takeoff and landing. She loved red, white, pastels, and blue.
Education was precious to her. Whether her children wanted to go to school or not, she woke them, prepared them, and sent them off, never late. She was a human clock, reading the night sky with astonishing accuracy.
Imogene was a provider, protector, and powerful prayer warrior. She prayed daily for her children, her community, her country, and the world. Her legacy is one of faith, love, discipline, and service. Today, we truly “Sing of the Goodness of God” because of her life.
She is survived by her children, grandchildren, great‑grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and a host of family and friends. Special thanks to her grandson Barrington Johnson, her devoted caregiver, protector, accountant, scheduler, and technology support.
Imogene was the fifth child in the Lennox family but lived the longest. She is preceded in death by her brothers George, Harold, Clarence, Joseph, and Samuel; her sisters Sarah, Dorothy, Catherine, and Lydia; and her daughter Marlene (Nola) Johnson.
In honor of her love for education and her lifelong commitment to helping others, the family requests that donations be made to the “Sister Imogene Johnson Education Scholarship.” An offering will also be collected at the funeral. Her life was a song of goodness, and her melody continues in all who loved her. Her legacy of faith, love, and service will continue to inspire all who knew her.
We thank God for her long, blessed life as a provider, protector, and persistent prayer warrior.
A celebration of her beautiful life will be held on Sunday, June 28, 2026, at 11:00 am at the Palmers Cross Seventh‑day Adventist Church, May Pen, Clarendon, Jamaica. Viewing and visitation will take place from 9:00–10:45 am at the same location. Interment will follow in the family plot at Chandlers Pen, Chateau District, Beckford, Clarendon, Jamaica.
