September is Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month, a reminder that understanding your risk and keeping up with recommended screenings can make a difference.

Gynecologic cancers affect the female reproductive system and include cervical, ovarian, uterine, vaginal, and vulvar cancers. While there is no routine screening test for every gynecologic cancer, cervical cancer is one of the most preventable. Regular screening can identify changes in cervical cells before they become cancer, and HPV vaccination can help prevent infections responsible for most cervical cancers.

Providing high-quality emergency care is more than treating an illness or injury. It’s also about creating an environment where patients and families feel supported.

At St. Joseph’s Health, our Emergency Department team is adding an extra layer of comfort for our youngest patients by transforming pediatric treatment rooms with colorful, hand-painted artwork.

Brian Dolan, Nursing Director of Emergency Services, recently joined Mornings with Ken Rosato on On New Jersey to discuss the project and why creating a comforting environment is another important part of the expert, compassionate care our teams provide every day.

Award-winning heart care for our community.

St. Joseph’s University Medical Center has earned two 2026 Gold Plus awards from the American Heart Association’s Get with the Guidelines® program:

• Heart Failure Gold Plus with Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll
• Coronary Artery Disease STEMI Receiving Center Gold Plus with Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll

These national recognitions reflect our commitment to evidence-based care for patients with heart failure and those experiencing STEMI, one of the most serious types of heart attack. The additional Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll recognition highlights our commitment to meeting quality measures for cardiovascular patients who are also managing Type 2 diabetes.

These distinctions recognize the expertise, teamwork, and evidence-based care our cardiac teams provide every day.

Five years ago, St. Joseph’s Health maintenance engineer Steven Leet thought the pain in his right arm was bad enough to call out sick from work. When the pain worsened, he drove himself to the St. Joseph’s Wayne Medical Center Emergency Department. By the time he arrived, the pain had spread to his chest, and he could no longer walk.

Steven was having a heart attack.

The ED team met him at his car, carried him inside, and began stabilizing treatment before transferring him to St. Joseph’s University Medical Center in Paterson, where he underwent quadruple bypass surgery.

This past Sunday marked five years since that day. To celebrate the anniversary, Steven returned to the Wayne ED with sweet treats and a heartfelt thank you for the team that helped save his life.

“I am so thankful for the Wayne ED and all the staff throughout St. Joseph’s Health that helped me five years ago,” Steven said. “They saved my life and gave me at least five more years.”

Congratulations on five years, Steven, and thank you to the teams who were there when one of our own needed them most. ❤️

David Nicoll had already undergone two back surgeries when numbness in his left foot returned, and years of worsening pain began limiting his life. After being told another surgery wasn’t possible, he found Nikhil Sahai, MD, a fellowship-trained orthopedic spine surgeon at St. Joseph’s Health who specializes in complex revision surgery.

Following complex minimally invasive spine surgery in 2025, David set an ambitious recovery goal: climbing mountains at Machu Picchu. Eight months later, at age 51, he reached the top, and today, he says he is living without pain.

“Dr. Sahai told me it was going to be a big surgery and he was right. But it was the best thing I could have done. I’m so grateful to Dr. Sahai. He literally gave me back my life.”
