You know when someone you love says “I’m fine,” but something about them tells you otherwise?
You don’t want to push. You don’t want to make things awkward. And you might not even know what to ask.
But you can still check in.
“Hey, you’ve seemed a little off lately. How have you really been doing?”
Give them a chance to answer honestly. Listen to what they have to say. Stay with the conversation instead of feeling like you need to have the right answer.
And if they don’t open up the first time, that’s okay. Check in again. Let them know you meant it when you asked.
World Su***de Prevention Day is September 10, but the conversations don’t have to stop there. Keep checking in. Keep asking. Keep making space for the people you love to be honest about how they’re really doing.
If you’re worried about someone, reach out.
And if you’re struggling yourself, telling someone you trust can be a good place to start. You don’t have to figure out the words perfectly.
If you or someone you know is in crisis, call or text 988 to reach the Su***de & Crisis Lifeline.
