🏥 “How do I know if a skilled nursing facility is actually good?”
Our advice: Look beyond the lobby!!!!
Here are 3 questions you should be asking:
✨ Is rehab truly in-house?
Ask who employs the therapy team and how closely therapy and nursing work together. Many post acute care facilities use contracted staff to provide therapy.
👩⚕️Does your team provide therapy on the weekends?
When your family member is away from home every day counts. Sitting in bed on Saturday and Sunday is not helping them reach their goals.
🩺 Do you use agency staff?
Consistency matters!! Staff who know the residents often notice subtle changes. Most people think to ask about the staffing ratios, but who is working is just as important as how many people are working.
📞 What happens at 8 PM on a Saturday
If my loved one has a change in condition? who evaluates them? How accessible is the team of physicians and nurse practitioners? Who calls me?
You can learn basic facts from a website or a brochure… but you can learn even more by walking through the door and paying attention.
Feel free to schedule a tour or pop in unexpected. How does the building smell? How do the staff greet you? More importantly, how are they greeting and treating the residents?
Don’t just look for an available bed closest to home or the fanciest building.
Look for the team you can trust when your loved one needs care the most.
