🖤 Black History Month | Mental Health Matters in Mississippi 🧠

Mental health is part of health—no exceptions. 🩺🌟

📊Here’s what the data tells us about our state and community:

📍 About 38% of Mississippians identify as African American—the highest share of any state in the U.S. 🇺🇸📈

📊 In Mississippi overall, over 40% of adults reported anxiety or depression symptoms recently, and about 1 in 5 adults were unable to get counseling or therapy when needed.

🧠 Across the nation, African American adults are less likely to receive mental health treatment than the U.S. average—and about 36% less likely to get help even when identified.

📉 Depression estimates in Mississippi show that our African American population are around 16% for depression prevalence, similar to national trends, but with barriers to care still high locally.

🚧 Mississippi also ranks low in access to mental health services—which affects all communities, including Black Mississippians.

These aren’t just numbers—these are our neighbors, friends, family, and co-workers. And the story isn’t just about struggle; it’s also about resilience, resourcefulness, and gaining support when help works best.

🌟 Our own Shania Hoskins Edwards represented A Good Mind Too well today at Kemper County Wildcat Athletics with their students off the field!

‼️ Community outreach is what it is all about. Until we become more open to discussing important mental health issues surrounding self care, stigma, and issues that are ever evolving in our teen/adolescent community, they will continue to impact our future generations.

😊 AGMT is thankful to be present to help guide these athletes on important mental health signs that are abnormal, how to cope, and what to do when help is needed.

⚫️A Good Mind Too Is Growing🎉

⚪️Good news everyone! We have recently added a new provider and nurse practitioner to our group, Brandi Ogletree. She has many years of experience as a registered nurse and has most recently worked on the inpatient psychiatric unit at UMMC. Also, UMMC is where she graduated and obtained her master’s degree in nursing. She is a local gal and is from Sebastopol, where she lives with her family. She has a brand-new granddaughter, Oaklynn, and loves spending time with her during her time off.

⚫️When she's not taking care of patients, Brandi can be caught reading Colleen Hoover (the best), sleeping, or sipping on her favorite, sweet tea (she admits she’s slightly addicted). Her happy place is on the beach, or anywhere there are waves and salty air. Her favorite holiday is just around the corner, Christmas!

⚪️Currently, Brandi can accept Medicare patients Monday through Friday, during office hours. She will start providing care and medication management to local mental health patients in February. WELCOME OUR NEW NURSE 🫶🏼

We are pleased to introduce you to our newest nurse in the office, Shania Edwards. Shania brings great knowledge, hands-on patient care, and awesome communication skills that can’t be beat. She is learning fast, and we want everyone to welcome her with kind words in the comments! If you need to ask a question about symptoms, have a refill request, or a have a clinical question for our providers, Shania is your girl!

Shania has been married to her husband Brian for 3 years. They have two children and Shania is part of a huge family herself, with several siblings. She obtained her LPN license locally and plans to further her education in the future in the nursing field! We can already tell that Shania will do great things, especially with coordinating care for our patients at A Good Mind Too! Overjoyed to have her here with us is an understatement!

⬛️Some interesting facts about Shania:

⬜️She loves to run. One day, she hopes to run a marathon. She’s also ambidextrous in all sports.

⬛️A few wishes of hers include owning a beach house (her favorite happy place) and for there to be no more hatred in the world.

⬜️She has watched the entire show of Friends FOUR times. How could you not love that show?
