MYTH: Green burials are plain and impersonal.

FACT: Green burials can be some of the most personal, meaningful services of all. From favorite music and handwritten notes to wildflowers, storytelling, family participation, and celebrations held entirely outdoors — choosing a natural burial doesn’t mean giving up personalization. It simply means honoring someone in a way that’s gentler on the earth, too. 🌿

During the Victorian era, funerals became deeply ritualized expressions of love, grief, and status. Families often held elaborate mourning periods, wore black for months or even years, covered mirrors in the home, and kept memorial jewelry made from a loved one’s hair. Post-mortem photography also became common — often the only photograph a family would ever have of someone they loved.

To Victorians, mourning wasn’t something to hide. Grief was treated as an important, visible part of love and remembrance. 🖤
