Every Behavior Has a Story

Trauma can affect how children think, feel, behave, and interact with the world around them. Trauma-informed care helps us look beyond behaviors to better understand a child’s experiences, needs, and strengths.

At Compassion Behavioral Health Services, our therapists utilize a variety of trauma-informed treatment approaches tailored to each child’s unique needs. We offer specialized trauma-focused modalities including Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT). We also incorporate trauma-informed approaches such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and mindfulness-based interventions to help children develop healthy coping skills, improve emotional regulation, and build resilience.

Healing is not about forgetting the past. It is about helping children feel safe, supported, and empowered as they move forward.

Summer is here, and routines often change. For children and teens, summer can bring excitement, but it can also bring challenges. Changes in schedules, less structure, social pressures, family transitions, and increased screen time can all affect emotional well being.

As you move through the summer months, take time to check in with your child. Ask how they are feeling, listen without judgment, and make space for open conversations. Sometimes the most meaningful support comes from simply being present and available.

If your child is struggling with anxiety, depression, behavioral concerns, or other mental health challenges, support is available. Compassion Behavioral Health Services offers counseling and medication management services for children and adolescents.

Mental health does not take a summer vacation, and neither does the importance of caring for it!

As Mental Health Awareness Month comes to a close, the need for awareness does not.

Children continue to face challenges with anxiety, depression, grief, stress, behavioral concerns, and life changes every day of the year. Creating space for conversations about mental health, recognizing when a child may be struggling, and connecting families with support can make a lasting difference.

Mental health is not a one month conversation. It is an ongoing commitment to helping children build the skills, confidence, and support systems they need to thrive.

Compassion Behavioral Health Services remains committed to providing counseling, group services, and medication management for children and adolescents throughout the year because every child deserves the opportunity to be heard, supported, and successful.

Awareness may have a designated month, but caring for mental health never ends.

Mental health care is not one size fits all. Some children benefit from learning coping skills in individual counseling, some connect better in a group setting with peers, and others may benefit from medication management as part of their treatment plan.

Every child’s needs, experiences, and strengths are different, which is why personalized support matters.

Our team at Compassion Behavioral Health Service with children and families to provide care that meets them where they are and helps support long term emotional wellness, resilience, and growth.

Mental Health Awareness Month is a reminder that seeking support is not a last resort. It is one of many ways families care for their children’s overall wellbeing.

During Mental Health Awareness Month, we want to help normalize conversations about children’s emotional wellness.

Children experience stress, anxiety, grief, trauma, and emotional overwhelm too, but they may express it through behavior changes, withdrawal, irritability, difficulty focusing, or trouble managing emotions. Early intervention can help children strengthen coping skills, communication, and confidence in navigating life’s challenges.

At Compassion Behavioral Health Services, we are passionate about helping children and families feel seen, heard, and connected to care that meets their unique needs.

Please see our notice of closure below. Wishing you and your family a wonderful Holiday weekend together. 🩷💙

Children’s mental health challenges are more common than many people realize. Current data shows:

• 1 in 9 children ages 3–17 have diagnosed anxiety
• 1 in 12 have a diagnosed behavioral disorder
• 1 in 25 have diagnosed depression

Among teens, the numbers are also concerning:

• 4 in 10 high school students report persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness
• 2 in 10 seriously considered attempting su***de

These numbers are not meant to create fear. They are a reminder that emotional struggles in children and teens are more common than many people think. Early conversations, supportive relationships, and recognizing changes in mood or behavior can make a meaningful difference.

This month and every month, awareness matters.
