⚡ Putting Therapeutic Modalities into Practice!

At The Northeast College, our students are taking their clinical skills to the next level by exploring the application of Russian Electrical Stimulation in our Therapeutic Modalities course!

💪 What is Russian Stimulation?

Russian stimulation is a form of neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) that uses medium-frequency alternating current delivered in bursts to produce muscular contractions.

Why is it important in rehabilitation?

✅ Muscle Re-education: Helps facilitate muscle activation when voluntary recruitment is impaired.

✅ Strengthening: Can supplement therapeutic exercise to improve muscle strength.

✅ Post-Injury Rehabilitation: May help address muscle inhibition and weakness following injury or surgery.

✅ Clinical Application: Teaches students how to appropriately select parameters, position electrodes, and integrate electrical stimulation into individualized rehabilitation programs.

🎓 Beyond the Classroom

Our students aren't just learning how to operate equipment. They're developing the clinical reasoning necessary to understand when, why, and how to use therapeutic modalities effectively.

The goal isn't simply to produce a muscle contraction. It's to understand how that contraction can contribute to restoring function and helping patients return to activity.

Bridging the gap between classroom knowledge and clinical application!

🏃 RUNNER’S REHAB | EXERCISE #3: SINGLE-LEG RDL

We've built knee control with the lateral step-down and lower-body strength with the split squat.

Now it's time to challenge the posterior chain!

The Single-Leg Romanian Deadlift is one of my favorite exercises for runners because it combines:

🔹 Hamstring and glute strength
🔹 Single-leg stability
🔹 Hip and pelvic control
🔹 Eccentric hamstring loading
🔹 Balance and coordination

Running requires us to repeatedly manage forces on one leg. The Single-Leg RDL provides a controlled way to strengthen the posterior chain while challenging single-leg control.

Start with 2–3 sets of 6–10 reps per leg.

Master the movement, then progressively increase resistance.

💪 Stronger hips. Stronger hamstrings. Stronger runners.

Being Able to Perform a Skill ≠ Being Ready to Compete.

Hezly Rivera, USA team member and Olympic Gold medalist had to withdraw from World Championships this past week.

Her case raises several important questions:

How do we assess sport-specific readiness? What happens when an athlete can tolerate modified training but not full competition? How should medical teams balance competitive goals against potential consequences of participation?

Importantly, withdrawing doesn't automatically mean rehabilitation failed. Sometimes the appropriate sports medicine decision is not to compete!

Have any thoughts?!

Different sports. Different demands. Individualized care. 🏒⚽🏈

A busy day supporting athletes at Hobart & William Smith, with conditions spanning:

▪️ Femoroacetabular impingement (FAI)
▪️ Hip labral tear
▪️ Scapular dyskinesis
▪️ Myofascial pain
▪️ Concussion
▪️ Pelvic/core instability
▪️ Lumbar pars injury

From the field and ice to the court and water, each athlete brings a unique history, movement pattern, and set of goals.

Grateful to contribute to a collaborative sports medicine team—and help student interns connect classroom knowledge with clinical care.

🏃 Runner’s Rehab: SPLIT SQUAT

We started with the lateral step-down, focusing on controlled knee loading and single-leg control. Now we’re building on that foundation with the split squat to challenge strength through the hip and knee. 💪

The split squat strengthens your quads and glutes while training each leg individually.

Keep your front foot planted, lower slowly, and push through your front leg to rise. Start with 2–3 sets of 6–10 reps per side.

Progress at your own pace—use support, adjust the depth, and add resistance as your strength and control improve.

This past week I spent time in Minnesota at the ACA Sports Council Annual Symposium! Lots of meetings, set ups, tear downs, logistics, and LEARNING!

Hats off to the board for the hard work👏🏻

Extremely proud to have my very own Northeast Sports Med & Rehab Club recognized as Chapter of the Year AND our current club president Cat be recognized as Student of the Year at the AGM! We have worked hard the last few years to get our institution on the map in the world of sports chiropractic education! This is proof we are being recognized but, our job is not done!

Congratulations to everyone on their achievements, efforts, and hard work this past year!

Learn it. Practice it. Apply it. 💥

Five years ago, I had the opportunity to create the Sports Injury Management course at Northeast College of Health Sciences—and I’ve been proud to teach and continue developing it ever since.

Weekend 1 focuses on manual therapies and giving students the opportunity to practice hands-on techniques they can use when caring for athletes. The goal is to connect classroom knowledge with clinical application while building skill, confidence, and sound clinical decision-making.

It is incredibly rewarding to watch students learn the concepts, practice the techniques, and begin applying them. A HUGE thank you to the students for giving me their time and allowing me to capture these moments!

This is hands-on sports medicine education.

Today marked the start of a new chapter working with Hobart and William Smith Athletics, providing sports chiropractic care and supporting their student-athletes and athletic teams.

I'm excited to bring my experience to the HWS athletic community, while also having the opportunity to mentor student interns as they gain hands-on experience and develop their clinical skills in a collegiate sports medicine environment.

A great opportunity to combine two things I’m passionate about: sports medicine and clinical education.

Looking forward to what’s ahead!

🌎 MY FIRST INTERNATIONAL SPORTS MEDICINE EXPERIENCE

In 2021, I had the opportunity to travel to Jesolo, Italy for the WAKO Kickboxing World Championships—my first experience working at an international sporting event.

And it opened my eyes to an entirely different level of sports medicine.

I had the opportunity to evaluate and treat athletes from more than 30 countries, each bringing different languages, cultures, training backgrounds, and approaches to their sport.

Sometimes communication was easy.

Other times, Google Translate became part of the clinical toolkit. 📱🌎

But regardless of the language being spoken, the goal was the same: understand the athlete, evaluate what was happening, and help them safely compete at the highest level possible.

It was also my first opportunity to experience world-class competition on an international stage and see firsthand the preparation, commitment, and resilience required of elite athletes.

That experience changed my perspective.

It reinforced that sports medicine is about much more than treating an injury. It's about communication, adaptability, problem-solving, understanding the demands of the sport, and earning an athlete's trust—sometimes in a very short period of time.

Looking back five years later, this was an important step in my professional journey and helped fuel my desire to continue pursuing opportunities in sports medicine, education, and international competition.
