Varicose veins develop when the valves inside your veins weaken or stop working properly. These valves are meant to keep blood flowing in one direction, back toward the heart. When they fail, blood can pool in the veins, causing them to enlarge and become visible.
Several factors can contribute, including:
- Prolonged standing or sitting
- Aging and natural wear on vein walls
- Genetics (family history)
- Hormonal changes
- Obesity or increased pressure on the veins
- Pregnancy
While often seen as a cosmetic concern, varicose veins can also cause symptoms like aching, heaviness, swelling, and discomfort.
