Donalda “Donna” Crowningshield, 77, passed away unexpectedly at UVM-Medical Center in Burlington on October 8, 2026. She was born in Elizabethtown, NY on September 5, 1949, the daughter of the late John and Eleanor (Hayward) Brant of Westport, NY. She was brought up by her grandparents, Constance and Albert of Essex, NY, due to health issues.

She graduated from Westport Central School and NCCC and attended SUNY Plattsburgh. Donna worked as a home health aide for North Country Home Services for 19 years, earning the Aide of the Year award; as a direct support staff member at ARC for 7 years; and at Tambrands in Willsboro for 18 years as a machine operator, production supervisor, and quality control supervisor before the plant closed.

Her greatest passion was sewing, making quilts and many other items, attending quilt retreats, and walking with her husband Glen, whom she married in 1981.

She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Glen; her brother Steve (Betty) of Meriden, Conn.; her sisters Brenda (Jeff) Charles of Clermont, Florida, Lenora Salzer of Oneida, and Tina (Bob) Huber of Cohoes.

She was a member of Champlain Valley Quilters Guild in Plattsburgh, holding the position of treasurer for 15 years; Pleasant Valley Quilters having the positions of Treasurer, Vice President, and President; Lady Bug Quilters Group; DAR; Treasurer of Women’s Fellowship, Trustee and member of the Lewis Congregational Church; on Advisory Council Board for Essex County Office of the Aging; and the Executive Board of the Advisory Council and volunteer at the Elizabethtown Thrift Shop.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, October 24, 2026, at 11:00 at the Deerhead Cemetery in Lewis.

Patricia A. Eggleston, 90, passed away at home on October 11, 2026, with her family by her side.

She was born in Hartford, NY on March 6, 1936, the daughter of Oscar and Louise (Jones) MacDonald.

Patricia worked as a bookkeeper until her retirement. She had a gift for keeping records straight, and it carried over into her great love of history. She co-authored, along with two other women, three published books on the history of Saranac, preserving stories that might otherwise have been lost. She was also a lifelong genealogist who never tired of tracing a family line back one more generation.

The Saranac Methodist Church was at the center of Patricia’s life. She served as lay leader there for more than 30 years and sang in the choir for over 40.

Patricia loved to travel, and every other year she made the trip to Denver to visit her son. Closer to home, some of her happiest days were spent camping. She had camps on Taylor Pond and at Union Falls, and she enjoyed every season she spent at both.

She is survived by her son Andrew Allinson and her daughter Diane (George) Dumas; her grandchildren Christopher Davis, Matthew Davis, and Luke (Fae) Dumas; her great-grandchild Ezra Dumas; her step-grandchildren Brad Dumas and Kelley Dumas; her step-great-grandchildren Simone, Seamus, Lucian, and Wilhemina; as well as her son-in-law Ken Davis, sister-in-law Monica MacDonald; as well as several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her daughter Suzanne Davis; and her siblings.

A funeral service will be held at the Saranac United Methodist Church on Saturday, October 24, 2026, at 2:00 p.m., followed by a private committal service at the Saranac Independent Cemetery.

Jeanette M. Taylor, 53, passed away unexpectedly in an accident on October 1, 2026.

Jeanette was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, and friend whose warmth, laughter, and vibrant spirit touched everyone fortunate enough to know her. She had a beautiful smile that could brighten any room and an infectious laugh that brought joy to all who heard it. Her kind heart, quick wit, and loving nature made her someone people naturally gravitated toward, and she leaves behind countless cherished memories.

Born to Elaine LaPier and James Taylor, Jeanette was preceded in death by her beloved parents, her step-father Gerald LaPier her brother, James (Sarah) Taylor; Paul LaFountain and her stepbrothers, Gerald LaPier, Marshall LaPier, Tony (Linda) Hart and Gerard LaPier.

She is survived by her daughters, Katrina Bordeau and Bayleigh Olden, who were the pride and joy of her life. She was also grandmother to Oliver, Luna, and Nova.

Jeanette is also survived by her siblings, John Alteri, Earl Taylor, Judith (Stacey) Brooks, Elaine (John) Swain, Anna (Joseph) Young, Pete (Claire) LaFountain, Barbara Fraser and Eugene, Gary and Timothy Philips. She is further survived by her stepsiblings, Richard (Sharon) LaPier, Dorla (Keith) Collins, Helen (Lee) LaPier, Gerry LaPier, Gisele (Tom) Zajac, Mike (Tammy) LaPier and Carol Brust as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.

During her school years, Jeanette excelled as a member of the diving team, earning numerous awards and accolades through her dedication, athleticism, and determination. She approached challenges with confidence and perseverance, qualities that remained with her throughout her life.

Those who knew Jeanette will remember her as a fierce and unwavering defender of the people she loved. She never hesitated to stand up for family and friends. Beneath her strength was a deeply compassionate heart that cared profoundly for those around her.

Jeanette also had a wonderful sense of style and a fun-loving personality. She loved being fashionable, keeping up with trends, and bringing a little extra flair wherever she went. Combined with her great sense of humor, she had a special gift for making people laugh and feel at ease.

A private Celebration of Life will be held with immediate family members, there will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to St. Joseph's Addiction Treatment and Recovery Centers, mailed in the care of Heidrick Funeral Home, PO Box 127, Au Sable Forks, NY 12912.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude for the love, prayers, and support received during this difficult time and asks that Jeanette be remembered for the joy, laughter, strength, and love she brought to all who knew her.

Today feels especially personal as we honor those lost as a result of the terrorist attacks 25 years ago; our community mourns the loss of Lee Torrance.

Lee was a past Chief of the Upper Jay Fire Department, an Essex County Fire Investigator and Coordinator, and a member of Au Sable Forks EMS; he began his call to public service with the Au Sable Forks Fire Department, and he served as a communications specialist with New York State Police for more than 13 years. He dedicated much of his life to helping others, whether close to home or far beyond our community.

Following the attacks of September 11th, Lee traveled to New York City to assist in the response and recovery efforts, joining countless other first responders who stepped forward during an unimaginable time.

Those who knew Lee knew a man who cared deeply about his community and was always willing to help when help was needed. His life was defined by service, and his legacy will live on through the many people whose lives he touched.

As we pause today to remember the victims of 9/11 and honor all who responded, we also remember one of our own.

Thank you, Chief Torrance, for your service, your sacrifice, and your example.

Calling Hours will be held on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m., with a Memorial Service at 6:00, including Fire Department honors at Heidrick-Zaumetzer Funeral Home, 3 College St., Au Sable Forks. There will be a reception at the Upper Jay Fire Department after the services.

Twenty-five years later, September 11, 2001 still feels like yesterday for many of us.

We remember the lives that were taken, the families whose worlds changed forever, and the extraordinary courage of the firefighters, police officers, EMS personnel, and other first responders, and the armed forces who ran toward danger when others were running away.

Over the years, we have had the honor of caring for many first responders in our own communities. Some served on September 11, while others spent their lives answering calls for help in our communities, protecting their neighbors, and putting others before themselves. Their uniforms may have been different, but their commitment to service was the same.

Today, we remember them all. We are grateful for their sacrifice, their dedication, and the example they set for the rest of us.

May we never forget.
