Somewhere, somebody has stopped bringing you things.

Not out of cruelty. They got tired of the version of you that doesn't stay. So they stopped waiting, and they stopped telling you things, and one day they answered how many with a number that didn't include you.

You've been on the other side of this. You didn't know it ran both ways.

Pauline Boss spent fifty years on this. Families of the missing, of the demented, of the ones who came home different. Her point was that the line between in and out keeps moving. What gets less attention is that it moves in both directions, in every house, and nobody says a word about it.

You are somebody's ambiguous loss.

You've never said so. Neither have they.

The role ended. The habits didn’t get the news.

You still set out two cups. You still drive to the building where you used to work, and you don’t notice you’ve done it until you’re in the parking lot.

The life is gone. Your body kept the schedule.

Nobody answers the question for you. Not even the people who knew who you were.

Three cups spilled. Two standing behind him, upright, nothing wrong with them.

Everyone reads this card the same way. Turn around. Look at what you still have.

He knows they're there. He put them there.

What he can't do is turn around, because turning around is the part where you agree the other three are gone, and he isn't going to agree to that today.

He is not being stubborn. He has counted, accurately, and he is standing still.

No one is making him move.

You decided without them.

Not out loud and not on any particular day. But you stopped waiting, and you stopped telling them things, and somewhere in there you started answering how many with a number that doesn't include them.

They never went anywhere. They're at the table. Some days they surface, and they're funny again, and they ask about your week and mean it. You've seen this before. So you stay where you are. You hold something back on purpose and you'd call it being smart.

They can tell. They don't say so. Neither do you.

Pauline Boss called this boundary ambiguity. Who's in and who's out, when the person won't stay on one side of it.

The mind is trained to sort. Here or gone. It picks. In private. Fast.

The work is to stop picking.

The hard part isn't the hanging. It's what people do to you while you hang.

They want a date. They want to know what you're doing about it. They keep asking whether there's news, and then at some point they stop asking, which is worse.

The card doesn't ask you to get down. It asks for something else. Give up the answer. Give up the version of this that ends. Give up the idea that if you searched harder, called more people, read one more thing, it would resolve.

That's a real loss and it's the only one here you get to choose.

There's a name for it. Ambiguous loss. Pauline Boss named it in the seventies, working with the families of men who never came home from Vietnam.

Loss with no body. No date. Nobody to tell.

Sometimes they're gone and still here. Dementia. Addiction. The illness that took who they were and left the rest of them at the table. Sometimes they're here and gone. The estrangement. The divorce. The one who stopped calling and never said why.

Either way the grief has nowhere to go. There's no funeral for somebody who is still alive. So you carry it by yourself, and after a while you start to think something is wrong with you for carrying it at all.

It's grief. It just never got a day.

Eight cups, upright, nothing spilled. This is not the card of the thing gone wrong. He arranged them. They held what he wanted them to hold and they still do.
Grief that does not lessen, and the pull, and no argument between them that ends. Most people wait for one to win. He is moving with both of them at full strength.
He has no destination in the frame. There is no light on the ridge. Whatever is out there, the card declines to show it. If it showed you something better, the leaving would be easy and the man would be following orders.

Nothing drove him out.
