"If you lose a significant amount of weight, you're going to see changes to your skin," said Thomas Howard, MD, FACS, board-certified plastic surgeon at Aspirus.

Whether weight loss comes from GLP-1 medications, bariatric surgery, or lifestyle changes, significant weight loss can result in excess skin.

Dr. Howard discusses who may be a candidate for body contouring surgery, why maintaining muscle mass during weight loss is important, and how these procedures can complement the hard work that goes into reaching and maintaining a stable weight.

"The FDA's approval of bemotrizinol gives consumers another option when it comes to protecting their skin from the sun,” said Yinglai Chang, Pharmacy Resident with Aspirus Health.

A new sunscreen ingredient, bemotrizinol, is expanding options for sun protection.

While mineral sunscreens create a physical barrier against UV rays, chemical sunscreens absorb UV rays and convert them into a form that's less likely to damage the skin. Both can be effective choices for daily use.

Congratulations to Halie Raj for being chosen as the recipient of the Aspirus St. Luke’s DAISY Award.

Halie was nominated by a Cardiac Unit CNA who unexpectedly found herself on the other side of patient care. As she faced an uncertain diagnosis and frightening cardiac episodes, Halie provided exceptional nursing care, reassurance and support during one of the most challenging times of her life.

The patient shared that Halie was a constant source of comfort, always responding quickly when she needed help and helping her navigate her recovery with confidence and compassion. One act of kindness stood out above all others. After learning the patient would spend Valentine’s Day on bedrest and miss celebrating with her boyfriend, Halie transformed a staff consult room into a special dinner space complete with decorations, lights and thoughtful touches so the couple could spend time together despite the circumstances.

The patient wrote, “I immediately began crying. Halie is the true definition of an Extraordinary Nurse and deserves this award.”

Thank you, Halie, for the compassion, dedication and extraordinary care you bring to your patients and their families every day. 💜🌼

Need a sports physical? A well-child visit can often take care of that while also giving your child's provider an opportunity to monitor growth and development, discuss physical and mental health, and address any concerns before the school year begins.

"Even if you don't think there's a problem, come in and check on your child's growth and development. We can make sure they're progressing in the healthiest way possible.” said Sarah Dennison, MD, pediatrician with Aspirus Health.
