Another Spirit Week at Milestone’s detox and short-term residential program! Hat Day and Flannel Day brought some extra personality to a team that shows up every day to do hard, meaningful work.

Serious dedication. Slightly less serious headwear. 💙

Every day, we care for people who face the uncertainty of where they will sleep and how they will stay warm. As nights grow colder, we are deeply concerned for their safety. Everyone deserves a warm, safe place to go.

Temperatures are already dropping below freezing at night, and the Portland City Council has yet to approve a winter warming shelter. We cannot let our unhoused neighbors suffer outside. Please join tonight's meeting via Zoom to urge the council to approve a winter warming shelter: portlandme.portal.civicclerk.com/event/9786/files/agenda/20581

While the top priority is that a warming shelter is approved in the city asap, ideally this shelter would be on the peninsula for easier access.

Also, the City has proposed using $900,000 of opioid settlement funds for a warming shelter. These limited funds are urgently needed for prevention programming, recovery centers, substance use treatment, and many other critical services. Our hope is that if Opioid Settlement Funds are needed to bridge gaps in funding for a warming shelter, they are used responsibly and only as needed, and that the city provides full transparency of how the funds are used.

Finally, thank you to all of the advocates with lived experience who work day in and day out to ensure the needs of our unhoused neighbors and people with substance use disorder are met with dignity and care, many of whom will be speaking at tonight's meeting!

Want to help your neighbors and share a little kindness? Making sandwiches is a simple, meaningful volunteer opportunity for families, workplaces, and civic groups. ❤️

Making 60–80 sandwiches and dropping them off at Milestone Recovery helps feed people and reminds them that someone cares. Each sandwich also gives our outreach team a chance to start a conversation, build trust, and connect someone with support.
