Writing an obituary is a wonderful way to celebrate a loved one’s legacy and honor their life. Getting started may feel like a daunting task, but it’s important to remember that there is no right or wrong way to compose an obituary.

Today we’re providing some general tips to consider as you create a thoughtful tribute to your loved one. Here are five sections to consider including:

▪ Announcement of death
▪ Brief life history
▪ Survived by and preceded by
▪ Expressing thanks
▪ Service details

Focus on the highlights of the person’s life:
▪ Family background
▪ Education, military service, career, or major accomplishments
▪ Important life events and milestones

Describe who they were:
▪ Personality traits
▪ Values and beliefs
▪ Hobbies and passions
▪ Memorable qualities

An obituary can be:
▪ Formal and traditional
▪ Warm and personal
▪ Humorous, if that reflects the person's character

Writing prompts:
▪ What would friends say they will miss most?
▪ What accomplishments made them proud?
▪ What traditions, hobbies, or passions defined them?
▪ What lessons did they leave behind?
▪ What stories best capture their personality?
