Vicky was born on May 8, 1944 in the small southern MN town of Beauford. She lived across the street from her grandparents farm. She is the oldest of 5 siblings spread across 20 years. The family moved when she was about 8 years old, to Des Moines, IA. She also lived in New Ulm, MN and St Louis Park, MN, where she graduated from high school.
She went on to college at Macalester University in St Paul, MN, where she received a degree in Education. She worked as a teacher for almost 20 years. She was a no-nonsense teacher, who once penalized students with 5 pushups whenever they said the word “ain’t”. One time a boy who had been caught saying that word said, “I ain’t got to do 5 pushups” and Vicky replied with, “No you don’t, you’ve got to do 10!”
She then became an office manager for a PT clinic and later at a medical clinic. She is married and has 2 children, her son Mark and daughter Amy. She has 6 granddaughters and 4 great-grandkids. Her hobbies used to include crocheting, planting and tending flower gardens and reading. Now she enjoys singing, eating and participating in the many activities at Hallmark House.

November is National Family Caregivers Month.

Caring for a parent with dementia can bring a mix of love, worry, exhaustion, and difficult decisions. Sometimes, in focusing on a loved one’s needs, caregivers forget that their own well-being matters, too.

The American Psychiatric Association shares helpful reminders about supporting family caregivers, recognizing stress, and knowing when to ask for help.

If you’re caring for a loved one, or beginning to notice that they may need more
support, this is a worthwhile read.

Our Halloween ghosty has been up to some mischief at Hallmark House!

We caught our silly little ghost peeking through bedroom windows to make residents smile, helping clean the halls, checking every mirror for anything spooky (she’s clearly watched too many Halloween movies ), and even enjoying a little playtime outside!

We’re not sure how much work she actually got done, but she certainly kept things entertaining! 🎃

From our little ghost to your family, we wish you a Halloween filled with laughter, fun, and just the right amount of spooky. Happy Halloween from Hallmark House!

Meet them where they are. Come as you are.

Not every visit with your loved one will look the same. Some days, they may be happy to talk and laugh with you. Other days, they may be quiet, confused, restless, or simply not interested in visiting. You don't have to force the moment to be something it isn't.

Meet them where they are. Come as you are.

If today means sitting quietly beside them, hold their hand. If they want to listen to music, listen with them. If they want to talk about something from 60 years ago, let them.

You don't have to make every visit perfect. You just have to be there.

As dementia progresses, your loved one may no longer recognize you in the way they once did. They may forget your name, your relationship, or even the moments you’ve shared together.

But recognition isn’t always about words.

Sometimes it’s the comfort they feel when you walk through the door. The calm in your voice. A familiar hand to hold. The feeling that, for a moment, they are safe.
They may not be able to tell you who you are.

But they may still know that being with you feels good.

When the question comes around again… You’ve already answered it. Then you answer it again. And then, a few minutes later, they ask you again.

It can be frustrating but for someone living with dementia, the question may be new every time. They may not remember asking it, or they may be looking for reassurance rather than information.

Instead of focusing on “I just told you that,” try asking yourself, “What do they need from me right now?”

Sometimes the answer isn’t another explanation. It’s reassurance, patience, or simply knowing that you’re there.

The question may repeat. Your reassurance can, too.
