Canadian Orthopaedic Association Annual Meeting – St. John’s, Newfoundland

Dr. Michel Arcand was honored to present research, “Stick Checks and Setbacks: A Comprehensive Analysis of Upper Extremity Injuries in Lacrosse by Age and Gender,” at the Canadian Orthopaedic Association Annual Meeting in St. John’s, Newfoundland.

This project was a collaborative effort with an outstanding team: Simbarashe Peresuh , MD (Research Fellow, UOI), Jacob Johnson, BS, Peter Dinh, BS (Research Fellows and The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University students), David Bruni, MD (Sports Medicine Fellow), Timothy Reiad, BS, Jacob Glueck, BS, and Joseph Gil, MD University Orthopedics, Inc..

The study found that the shoulder, fingers, and hand are the most commonly injured areas in lacrosse players. We also identified important differences by age and gender:

🏑 Fractures were more common among male high school players

🏑 College male athletes experienced a wider variety of injury patterns

🏑 College female athletes had a higher incidence of hematomas

Understanding these injury trends is an important step toward improving player safety. We hope these findings can help guide future rule modifications, protective equipment improvements, and injury prevention strategies to reduce the burden of lacrosse-related injuries.

Thank you to all of my co-authors and collaborators for their hard work on this project.

Thank you to Zimmer Biomet and Dr. Derek Jenkins of our Adult Reconstruction teaching faculty for leading a cementless total knee lab course featuring advanced medial congruent technology and Vitamin E bearing surfaces.

By educating our early career surgeons on the latest advancements in total knee replacement technology, we are helping improve outcomes for both current patients and the future patients they will care for throughout their careers.

“Educating our early career surgeons on cutting-edge total knee replacement technology benefits our current patients and the future patients they will treat in their practices,” says Dr. Jenkins.
