4 weeks ago, Walter told me he wanted nothing to do with activities. He was adamant, but I promised him that I would change his mind. Today, he joined me in presenting our Travel Tuesday to Israel, sharing his personal items (an 80yo Torah and his own shofar) plus some Hebrew words. After the activity, I asked him if he would be coming to future Travel Tuesdays, and he gave me a big smile and said “Most definitely!”
It’s moments like this that make this job worth it. Not every activity will get every resident out, but it’s important to learn what matters to each of them. I adjusted how we did our travel days to make it more exciting for residents like Walter, and successfully got him involved and engaged. It means to world to me to be able to connect with these residents and to find common interests to build lasting relationships with them.
