When Alexandra (Ali) Butler discovered a lump under her arm for the second time, she never imagined she'd be facing a different and more aggressive type of breast cancer in her 30s.

Through expert, coordinated care at Duke Health, Ali completed chemotherapy, radiation therapy and surgery while managing the challenges of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. Today, she's back to running, working and enjoying life.

"I trusted Duke. This is where I need to be," she said.

Community health takes teamwork, and these future health professionals got a firsthand look at how it happens.

During the third Medical Exploration Day (MedEx Day), ninth-grade students from Durham Early College of Health Sciences (DECHS) explored the many organizations and partnerships that help keep communities healthy. Students connected with representatives from the American Red Cross, North Carolina Central University Clinical Research Unit, Duke-NCCU Bridge, El Centro's Mobile Health Unit and Duke Pet Therapy, and learned about safety and professionalism before their first Duke Health site visit next month.

A special guest, Apollo, helped make the day memorable. 🐾
