Do lines and edges look doubled, smeared, or hard to focus?

That’s what astigmatism can look like in real life. It happens when the cornea or lens is shaped more like a football than a basketball, so light doesn’t focus on one point. The result can be blur or ghosting at any distance, glare and streaks around lights at night, eye strain, and headaches. Astigmatism is very common and treatable. Depending on your eyes, options can include glasses, toric contact lenses, laser vision correction, or lens implants designed to correct astigmatism, such as a toric lens at the time of cataract surgery. Strong nearsighted prescription and not sure LASIK is an option?

Today, Dr. McGlone is performing an ICL, or Implantable Collamer Lens, a procedure designed for younger patients, typically around 25 to 40, with very strong nearsighted prescriptions. Laser vision correction works by reshaping the cornea, and there’s only so much tissue to work with. With a very strong prescription, that can raise the risk of dry eye or a cornea that becomes too thin. ICL takes a different path. We don’t touch the cornea at all. A thin lens is placed inside the eye, between the cornea and your natural lens, to correct high prescriptions. It’s also reversible, and when cataract surgery is needed years down the road, the lens can be removed through a tiny incision. For patients who have relied on thick glasses and contacts for most of their lives, this can be life-changing, and it can reduce the problems that come from wearing contacts all day.

Tired of glasses and contacts, but not sure LASIK is right for you?

The Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL) is an option worth knowing about. An ICL is a soft, foldable lens placed behind the iris and in front of your natural lens, so no corneal tissue is removed. It’s designed for patients who are nearsighted, with or without astigmatism, and it may be a good fit if you have thinner corneas or aren’t a LASIK candidate. The procedure begins with a micro-incision and typically takes under 30 minutes per eye. The lens has built-in UV protection and can be removed if ever needed. At NCO Eye Center, candidacy is determined at your eye exam, so we can see whether ICL fits your eyes and your goals.

Think of your lower eyelid as a hammock.

It’s suspended between two points, and if one side stays low, lifting the other won’t fix it. That’s why a lower eyelid that has pulled down after a blepharoplasty, or with age, often needs more than a single maneuver. Older patients with an age-related ectropion may benefit from a lateral tarsal strip, which shortens the lid. In younger patients who have had a blepharoplasty go wrong, we generally avoid that, since shortening the lid can change the eye for good. Instead, we focus on lifting the lid together, including the central and inner part through a medial canthopexy, canthoplasty, or orbicularis tightening, so the tear duct opening sits back on the eye. A lid in the right position can blink well, stay moist, and drain tears the way it should.
