Giving back was at the heart of our Adult Services community programs this summer. As part of this special theme, participants created thank-you gifts and visited community supporters to share their appreciation.

One meaningful stop was a visit with the AbilityPath Auxiliary—more than 100 dedicated women who generously give their time and support to AbilityPath programs. Watch the video to see our participants help us say thank you!

Today, on National Senior Citizens Day, we celebrate the wisdom, experiences, and contributions of older adults in our community including those in AbilityPath programs.

As people age, they may face increased isolation, health concerns, and barriers to accessing the support they need. For older adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, these challenges can be even more complex. Every senior deserves to be valued, heard, and supported in staying active, connected, and engaged in the life of their community.

Today and every day, we honor the seniors who enrich our programs and remind us that every stage of life deserves dignity, opportunity, and belonging.

Congratulations to Marena Moua, and the one year anniversary of launching the new Self-Determination Program!

"It’s been a year since AbilityPath launched the Self-Determination Program (SDP) pilot in Palo Alto. That means one year since I stepped into this role and started building everything from scratch.

In just a year, I learned how to coordinate recreational and therapeutic services for participants who required high need 1:1 support. We incorporated physical training, music therapy, volunteering, community engagement, social skills development, and behavioral intervention. I also built a strong partnership with the City of Palo Alto, where our participants have access to community centers that can accommodate their needs.

As we expand the program to different regions in the Bay Area, I’ve taken on hiring and training talented individuals and actively learning new ways to become a better leader. I can’t imagine what lies ahead, but I am ready to continue advocating for our community and making their worlds more fulfilling.

Thank you to the wonderful families involved in bringing this program to life. Hearing your stories has inspired me for a lifetime. Thank you for your trust, patience, and partnership. You are the reason why this work is meaningful.

While I am proud of these accomplishments, none of it could have been done without the amazing team of specialists I’ve had the honor the lead. Thank you for your invaluable input, support, and dedication to showing up every day for the participants we serve. I have learned so much from you. From every mistake to every success, you have no idea how much you’ve impacted our participants’ lives. It’s been so special and humbling being the first official cohort to execute an SDP design, and we have done it so fiercely. The program name really speaks for itself: Self Determination ❤️."
