David Boyd passed away unexpectedly at his home on July 9, 2026.

He was born on October 23, 1961. He was preceded in death by his mother, Linda Boyd; his father, Jerome “Eddie” Boyd; and his brother, Daniel Boyd of Richlands, Virginia.

He is survived by his sister, Karen Boyd McClintock, and her husband, Patrick McClintock, of Richlands, Virginia; his daughter, McKenna Hayden, of Damascus, Virginia; and the light of his life, his granddaughters, Zyleigh Hayden and Vylette Hayden, of Damascus, Virginia. He was loved by many, including his close friends Ken Ball, Craig and Melissa Hunsaker, Jeff Simons, Katie Smith, and the residents and staff of Cumberland Mountain Group Home in Honaker, Virginia.

He loved nature, wildlife, photography, sports, and listening to music (including creating his “song of the day” series), and he loved watching his granddaughters in their various stages of life. He was a wonderful father, brother, grandfather, and friend, easygoing and fun to be around, and will be missed dearly by all.

A celebration-of-life service will be held at a later date.

Glenn Henry McGuire, age 71, of the Thompson Valley area of Tazewell, Virginia, officially ran out of gas on Thursday, September 3, 2026, passing away peacefully at a Chilhowie assisted living home after a long, hard-fought illness.

Born on January 14, 1955, to the late George Earnest McGuire and Ruth Ann Harrison McGuire, Glenn spent his life proving that you can take the boy out of the country, but you can’t take the horsepower out of the country boy. A jolly soul with an addictive smile and a legendary, mischievous glint in his eye, Glenn truly loved life and left a trail of laughter (and probably some skid marks) wherever he went.

Glenn was a proud country boy who loved farming and caring for animals, but he also possessed the absolute spirit of a daredevil. He drove his cars and trucks like he was auditioning for the Fast & Furious franchise. But his true mechanical soulmate was his beloved moped. With Glenn at the handlebars, that little moped became an all-terrain mountain climber. You never quite knew where he might end up, but you knew he was having the time of his life getting there. He faced life's many hurdles with that same fierce, unstoppable determination. To know him was to love him—the good, the bad, and the beautifully ugly.

Paul Freddie Blankenship, age 65, of Richlands, Virginia, passed away Wednesday, September 2, 2026 in a Richlands, Virginia hospital.

He was born in Buchanan County and was the son of the late Acie David Blankenship and Tinie Harman Blankenship.

He lived in the Tazewell County area most of his life. As a young man he started working for the forestry where he loved the outdoors. Later on, following in his dad’s and brothers footsteps, he became a coal miner. His mining career ended when he became disabled from a mining accident. He loved doing woodwork in his workshop and hunting and fishing and playing his guitar. He was a loving husband, father, and brother. His favorite past time was spending precious time with his wife and children whom he loved with all his heart. He looked forward to and loved family reunions and Christmas to be with family. He was loved by many and will be greatly missed.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded by his brother, Jimmy Blankenship; sister in law, Barbara England Blankenship; brothers-in-law, Rev. Clyde Rose and Rev. Eddie Baldwin; father and mother in law, Lawrence and Lena Stinson; and sister and brother in law, Donna and Randolph Combs.

Jacqueline “Jackie” Boyd Webb “Granny”, age 95, moved from her earthly home to her heavenly home on September 2, 2026-exactly 14 years after her husband’s death. She died peacefully at the home of her daughter after a brief illness.

Jackie was born in Raven, Virginia, on May 28, 1931, to Bert L. and Pansy Bales Boyd. She lived in the Raven/Doran area for her entire life except for a brief time in Chicago, IL. She was homesick, so she and Grat moved back home. Jackie always said she had been blessed to live such a long life, but she also blessed all who knew her.

Jackie was a lifelong member of the Clearview United Methodist Church, which she served faithfully. She held many positions there and was a member of the building committee when the church was built. She served as secretary and president of the United Methodist Women where she had over 62 years of perfect attendance, including when she had breast cancer surgery. The unit moved their meeting so she could attend. In 1988, at a district meeting in Pearisburg, VA, Jackie was presented with a certificate for having the oldest dated “Response Magazine,” a national publication of the United Methodist Women. She and her close friend, Peggy Plaster, started the “Easter Egg” making project, and one year, the group made over 10,000 Easter eggs. James William “Bill” Cox, age 84, of Richlands, Virginia, passed away Sunday, August 30, 2026 at his home.

He was born in Richlands, Virginia and was the son of the late Ernest L. Cox, Sr. and Ruby Grey Lamie Cox.

He was a lifelong resident of the Richlands area and was retired from S&S Machinery and MineQuest. He was a loving father, brother, grandfather, and great grandfather and loved to go fishing and enjoy the outdoors. He will be missed by all that knew and loved him.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Wanda Gray Sword Cox; son, James William Cox, Jr.; sister, Emily Ann Cox; brothers, Tom Cox, Dan Cox, and Ernie Cox, Jr.; and a special nephew, Chuck Rambo.

Billy Charles Patton, age 82, of Richlands, Virginia, passed away Friday, August 28, 2026 in a Bristol, Tennessee hospital.

He was born in Richlands, Virginia and was the son of the late Earl Tivis Patton and Mildred Burke Patton.

Bill was a lifelong resident of the Richlands area and was a retired photographer for over 42 years from the Richlands News Press and was an assistant funeral director for the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands, Virginia. He was a graduate of Richlands High School Class of 1961 and was a member of the US Army National Guard unit in Richlands, Virginia. Bill was instrumental in starting the Richlands Rescue Squad and was a dedicated member for over 60 years. He was also a member of the Richlands Masonic Lodge #318 AF&AM. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Linda Kay Patton; and a brother, Howard Tivis Patton; and one brother in law, Kenny McGlothlin. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family and the last surviving member of the Beach Boys Gang: Steve Cooley, Howard Patton, Jim Boyd, and Armand Opitz.

Virginia Ruth Harrison, known affectionately by all as “Granny,” went to her heavenly home on Thursday, August 27, 2026, at the age of 92. She passed peacefully at her home in Bluefield, Virginia, surrounded by the family she loved beyond measure. Born in Ingleside, West Virginia, on October 4, 1933, Ruth was one of nine children, a cherished daughter of the late Truman and Gladys Proffitt Long. She was a dedicated worker, spending years at General Instrument and later retiring from Short Stop Foods in Tazewell, Virginia. Ruth was a woman of deep faith and community spirit, actively serving as a member of the First United Methodist Church of Bluefield and the VFW #9696 Ladies Auxiliary. To know Granny was to know a love that was fierce, unconditional, and protective. Her family was her greatest joy, her pride, and her purpose, and she always placed them above all else. Her home was filled with warmth, the aroma of her morning pot of coffee—yes, pot, because she never had just one cup—and the happy clutter of her favorite jigsaw puzzles. Ruth was also famously competitive; her passion for family card games was legendary. She played to win and never went easy on anyone, a trait that brought endless laughter and joyful memories to family gatherings. It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Sylvia Jean Short, age 76, of Raven, Virginia, who went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, at a Richlands, Virginia hospital, following a lengthy and courageous illness.

Born on January 15, 1950, in Russell County, Virginia, Sylvia was the daughter of the late Larnie McGlothlin and Creasy Maxie McGlothlin. She grew up with a strong work ethic and a gentle spirit, later dedicating many years as a talented seamstress for Honaker Sewing/Jacqueline Manufacturing and working the press for Swan Cleaners.

While Sylvia was known for her dedication to her work, her true masterpiece was her family. She was a woman of profound love, warmth, and devotion—a cherished wife, mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. Sylvia’s heart was happiest when she was surrounded by those she loved, and she poured her life into nurturing her family.

She is now peacefully reunited in Heaven with her parents; her loving husband, James Oliver Short; her beloved son, James Bradley Short; and her brother, Dean McGlothlin.

Her beautiful legacy of love lives on through her surviving family:
