Big feelings are part of being human! And, while they can be uncomfortable at times, there are lots of ways to help emotions feel more manageable.

Enter: Distress tolerance skills. These are coping skills made to help people get through short-term, high-stress moments.

When everything feels like too much, you don’t have to solve it all in the moment. In DBT, distress tolerance skills have one core job: help you get through an overwhelming moment without making things worse. This might mean pausing before you act, stepping back, or choosing the next small thing that won’t add harm. No need to problem solve - simply surviving the moment is the win.

These are normal and automatic survival strategies that are intended to help keep us safe. They often show up or intensify in times of stress. If you’ve experienced chronic stress or trauma, your nervous system may also activate or stay activated even when you’re no longer in immediate danger.

Which costume does your nervous system wear?Getting curious is the first step to identifying your patterns.

Our team focuses on nervous system regulation as a part of the therapy process. Follow along for more info or click the link in bio to learn more.

Thinking about joining a trauma group but not sure what it's really like? If so, this is a normal part of the process, and you're not alone!

Our Surviving to Thriving Trauma Support Group is a support- and skills-focused group for adult women. This group is not about having to retell your story. Instead, it’s about understanding how trauma shows up today, learning tools to feel more regulated, and connecting with others who get it.

Here's what you can expect:

• A thoughtful screening and psychoeducation process before you begin
• Skills from DBT, CBT, ACT, and somatic therapies
• Individual check-ins alongside the group, so you're supported throughout
• A rolling group, so you can join when you're ready

* Participants must be connected with an individual therapist to join. Don't have one? We're happy to help with a referral.

🗓 Thursdays, 5:15–6:30pm EST | Virtual
💬 $45/week | 10-week minimum

Our care coordinator and clinical team are here to guide you through every step. Visit our website to submit our confidential Inquiry Form to ask questions or get started: https://www.sustainablewellnessny.com/groups/surviving-to-thriving

But, seriously… we practice what we preach. If you don’t want stress to hijack your whole day, you need to give your nervous system a way back to the present. Once your body feels a little safer, your thinking brain can come back online. That’s when you can actually problem-solve, set the boundary, or have that hard conversation.

Reminder: These skills help you ride out a wave; they don’t replace therapy. If you need a therapist, we have openings! Visit our website to learn more at www.sustainablewellnessny.com.
