Disability Pride Month commemorates the The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) that was signed into law 36 years ago today (July 26) by then-President George H. W. Bush. It is considered to be the most important piece of legislation in the country surrounding the Disability Rights Movement.

This landmark legislation was a huge step towards creating a more inclusive and accessible society. Why is the ADA still so significant? Here are a few key reasons:

1. It designates people with disabilities as a protected class in order to protect them legally from discrimination.

2. It ensures that spaces that are open to the public are built to be accessible to people with disabilities.

3. It mandates that communication services, like telephones and websites, are accessible to people with hearing and vision disabilities.

We'll continue to advocate for greater support for people with cerebral palsy at the federal level, and we're grateful to the advocates who fought so passionately for these foundational disability rights.

Sadly, drowning is the #1 cause of death for autistic individuals. Please, have a swim safety plan in place for your loved one with autism. 💦🌊

Drowning is the number one cause of death for Autistic children, making water safety education an absolute necessity.

July 25 is World Drowning Prevention Day and we are sharing vital resources to help protect our community and make safety a priority in every aquatic environment.

The Autism Society of America’s free Water Safety Packet provides essential visual supports, checklists, and social narratives designed to help Autistic individuals and their support networks build lifelong safety skills.
