Secure Waste wants to share an update on an ongoing outbreak of cyclosporiasis, an intestinal illness characterized by symptoms such as diarrhea, nausea, and fatigue, that has been reported across more than half of the United States. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has confirmed that the outbreak spans 31 states, although the specific source of the infection is still being investigated by health authorities.

As of Thursday, the CDC has documented a total of 843 confirmed cases of cyclosporiasis, caused by the microscopic parasite Cyclospora. However, experts believe that the actual number of infections is likely significantly higher than reported. This discrepancy is attributed to several factors: the reported figures include only cases that states have communicated directly to the CDC; there is often a delay between symptom onset and case reporting; and many individuals who contract the illness may recover without seeking medical treatment or receiving a formal diagnosis.

For instance, Michigan reported a staggering total of 1,562 cyclosporiasis cases as of Friday, signaling the severity of the outbreak in that state alone. Nationwide, the CDC has noted 86 hospitalizations associated with the illness, but fortunately, no deaths have been linked to this outbreak so far.

Public health officials continue to urge vigilance and are working diligently to trace the source of the outbreak to prevent further infections. Individuals experiencing symptoms are advised to seek medical attention, especially if they have recently consumed food or beverages that could be implicated in the outbreak.
