Just got a new oral appliance? The first month is an adjustment period, not a finished result. Here's what's normal:

😬 Mild soreness the first several nights
πŸ’§ More saliva than usual at first (this settles down)
πŸŒ… Bite feels slightly "off" for a few minutes after you take it out in the morning
πŸ“… A series of follow-up visits to dial in the fit. That's expected, not a sign something's wrong

What's worth a call instead of waiting it out: sharp or worsening pain, a bite that doesn't return to normal, or symptoms that aren't trending better after a couple of weeks.

If something doesn't feel right, ask. Don't just wait and hope it goes away.

A second opinion isn't about doubting your provider. For TMJ and sleep apnea specifically, it makes sense when:

βœ”οΈ Treatment hasn't improved things after a real trial
βœ”οΈ You were told surgery is the only option, without a documented conservative work-up first
βœ”οΈ CPAP hasn't worked and no one's discussed alternatives
βœ”οΈ You've seen multiple specialists with "normal" results and no one's looked at the jaw and airway together
βœ”οΈ You're about to make a major, hard-to-reverse decision

A focused second opinion doesn't mean starting over. It means getting a second set of eyes on the specific question that's still unresolved. And sometimes it just confirms you're already on the right path, which is worth knowing too.

If you've been dizzy for months and every doctor says your ears are normal, read this.

Your jaw and your balance system share a nerve. 🧠

The auriculotemporal nerve, a branch of the trigeminal, supplies both the jaw joint and the tissues near your inner ear. When the TMJ is inflamed or misaligned, that inflammation can affect how your brain perceives balance signals.

That's why some TMJ patients experience:
πŸŒ€ Dizziness or a "rocking" sensation
πŸ’« Vertigo that isn't BPPV
πŸ‘‚ Ear fullness with normal hearing tests
πŸ€• Neck stiffness + dizziness together

The difference between TMJ dizziness and classic vertigo:
BPPV: Brief spinning when you roll over in bed
Meniere's: Episodic vertigo + hearing loss + tinnitus
TMJ dizziness: Dull, persistent, worse with jaw clenching or neck tension

If you've been through ENT, neurology, and vestibular therapy without answers, your jaw may be the missing piece.

We don't guess. We evaluate the whole system: jaw, airway, posture, and nerve pathways.

"Did my braces cause my TMJ?" I get this question a lot, and the honest answer is more nuanced than yes or no.

In my clinical experience, braces are not a reliable cause of TMJ disorder, and they are not a reliable fix for it either. The picture is less clear-cut than people assume, in both directions. What actually matters is how your bite functions day-to-day. How your teeth come together affects how your jaw muscles work, and that's true whether or not you've ever had braces.

If jaw symptoms show up during or after orthodontic treatment, don't assume it's normal and don't automatically blame the braces. It's worth its own evaluation: bite, joint, and muscles together.
