Wound packing is typically taught with "one for one" or "hand over hand" technique. The goal being: maintain pressure while continuing to pack.

This weekend, our student Jack was practicing how the same goal might be achieved if you only have one hand.

Trauma CPR is different.

In many traumatic cardiac arrests, the heart stops because the body has lost too much blood or cannot get oxygen—not because of a primary heart problem. CPR remains an important skill, but chest compressions alone often cannot reverse the underlying cause.

That’s why trauma care also focuses on rapid bleeding control, airway management, and getting definitive treatment as quickly as possible. A tourniquet applied in time or direct pressure to a severe hemorrhage may be just as critical as CPR itself.

The reality is that survival from traumatic cardiac arrest is uncommon... But uncommon is not impossible. Training prepares us for the moments when immediate action can make a difference.
