Yesterday, Mackinac Straits Health System proudly hosted Michigan Health & Hospital Association Keystone Center Safe Table Event, focused on medication safety and preventing errors in rural hospitals.

Hospital Pharmacist, John Wininger, served as the guest speaker, leading valuable discussions and training centered on improving patient safety and strengthening best practices in rural healthcare settings. Drawing from his own experience living and working on Mackinac Island, John shared unique insights into the challenges and importance of delivering safe, effective care in rural communities.

Mackinac Straits Health System is proud to announce the arrival of the da Vinci Surgical Robotic System in St. Ignace, expanding access to advanced, minimally invasive surgical care in Northern Michigan. 🩺

Initially supporting outpatient procedures in General Surgery and Urology, the program represents a significant investment in the future of healthcare in our region.

🤖 To mark this exciting milestone, local third graders participated in a community-wide “Name the Robot” contest, generating 137 creative submissions. Congratulations to Abigail from Pellston Schools, whose winning entry — Y.O.O.P.R. (Your Original Operating Patient Responder) — was selected as the official name.

We look forward to continuing to expand innovative surgical services while keeping high-quality care close to home. 🩵

What a great week celebrating our incredible team during National Healthcare Week! 💙

Throughout the week, Mackinac Straits Health System employees enjoyed a variety of appreciation activities in recognition of their hard work, compassion, and dedication to patient care. From a complimentary pulled pork lunch and ice cream social to appreciation gifts from Original Murdick's Fudge, it was a fun-filled week focused on celebrating our amazing staff.

Employees also enjoyed a two-day uniform sale and participated in the Healthy Habits Snack Swap organized by the Employee Engagement Committee. 🍎🍿

SMOKE ERADICATION EFFORTS: Yesterday afternoon, May 14, 2026 during a controlled burn event in a nearby residential area, smoke infiltration impacted our St. Ignace Campus, including the Hospital, Evergreen Living Center, and the Tribal Health Clinic. Appropriate response actions were initiated immediately, including ventilation management, assessment of affected areas, and coordination with City officials, and Emergency Management services. Patient and staff safety remained the top priority throughout the event. While conditions have improved, additional time is required throughout the next 24-48 hours to fully clear the smoke odor from the building filtration systems and improve air quality conditions.
