🗣️ “Adaptation of the Quick Aphasia Battery Into Italian: An Interdisciplinary and International Collaboration”

📖 Aphasiology

The Quick Aphasia Battery (QAB) is a free, efficient assessment designed to provide a multidimensional picture of language abilities in approximately 15 minutes. In this international collaboration, the authors adapted the QAB into Standard Italian as the *Test Rapido di Valutazione dell’Afasia*—the Italian QAB.

Drawing on expertise in linguistics, neuropsychology, speech-language pathology, and cognitive neuroscience, the team carefully adapted the test’s instructions, stimuli, and target responses for linguistic and cultural appropriateness while preserving the psycholinguistic strengths of the original assessment.

The resulting Italian QAB offers clinicians and researchers an accessible tool for assessing Italian-speaking individuals with aphasia. The project also highlights broader issues involving linguistic equity, language barriers in healthcare, multilingual aphasia care, and the opportunities and limitations of artificial intelligence in developing cross-linguistic clinical materials.

The authors propose that this interdisciplinary and international approach can serve as a model for creating freely available aphasia assessments in additional languages—including understudied and minority languages.

Connecting aphasia assessment, interprofessional collaboration, and discharge planning in adult inpatient care!

J. Hinckley, L. Kaploun, B. O’Connor Wells, and M. Morris contributed the chapter “Interprofessional aphasia assessment with discharge planning: Hospital inpatient (adult)” to Simulations for Speech-Language Pathology: A Compendium of Cases in Medical SLP (First Edition), edited by J. Smith.

This forthcoming 2027 chapter brings these important aspects of hospital-based aphasia care into a clinical simulation context for speech-language pathology education.

🗣️ “What Is Happening at Home? An A**lysis of the Impact of Real-World Communication and Daily Activities on Quality of Life for People With Aphasia”

📖 American Journal of Speech-Language Pathology

This study examined how real-world communication and everyday activities relate to quality of life for people with aphasia. Twenty people with aphasia and 19 age-matched adults without brain injury recorded their home communication over two consecutive days and completed daily activity diaries.

Although the two groups spent similar amounts of time in conversation, adults without brain injury produced more than twice as many words during the same period. Total conversation time emerged as a significant predictor of quality of life, while increased television watching was negatively associated with quality of life among participants with aphasia.

These findings highlight the importance of examining communication where it naturally occurs—in people’s homes and daily lives. They also encourage clinicians to consider everyday conversation and activity patterns when assessing communication needs and designing meaningful aphasia interventions.

🧠 “Neural Reorganization After Aphasia Therapy: A Scoping Review of Resting-State Functional Connectivity Changes”

📖 Aphasiology, Volume 40, Issue 4

This scoping review examined how the brain’s functional connections change following speech-language therapy—delivered alone or alongside noninvasive brain stimulation—for people with post-stroke aphasia.

Across 11 studies, the authors found evidence of increased or normalized brain connectivity following aphasia treatment. Six studies reported increases in connectivity within a single hemisphere, most often the left hemisphere, and four linked stronger connectivity with improvements in language outcomes. Findings also suggested that patterns of network organization before treatment may help explain differences in how individuals respond to therapy.

The review highlights the potential of resting-state functional connectivity to deepen our understanding of treatment-related neural reorganization and, in the future, help guide more individualized approaches to aphasia rehabilitation. The authors also note the need for larger studies and longer-term follow-up.
