We are an organization bringing awareness to the Movember Foundation and the men's health community.

Hello! My name is Ian Saltmarsh, and I run a non-profit called Travel for a Cure. Travel for a Cure is a third-party supporter of the Movember Foundation*. I've raised awareness for the men's health community for almost ten years! Although I've had great support over the years (raising over $23,000!), I want to do something BIG to celebrate a decade of giving back. My goal this year is to raise ov

er $100,000 by canoeing the Mississippi River and hosting fundraising opportunities along the way! You read that right! On Monday, May 29th, I will start the 2552- mile canoe trip from the headwaters at Lake Itasca to the salt waters of the Gulf of Mexico! This journey has always been a dream of mine, and I can't wait to share it with everyone! I humbly invite you to support us on this trip to help men live longer, happier, healthier lives!

*The Movember Foundation is a leading global non-profit organization committed to changing the face of men's health. Men are encouraged to grow mustaches during Movember (formerly known as November) to spark conversation and raise vital funds for its men's health programs. However, the discussion isn't limited to just one month. Year-round, since 2003, the Movember community has raised over $1.18 billion and funded over 1,250 projects focusing on prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and men's mental health and suicide prevention.

We were too excited to wait—we just finished counting the shoes from today’s drop!👞👟🥾

Roughly 140 pairs of shoes collected today!
That brings us to about 240 pairs total!
We can’t thank you enough for supporting this idea and, more importantly, for helping us start conversations about men’s health! 💙
But we still have a long way to go! Our goal is 1,440 pairs of shoes for our visual mental health display at Brisket & Bourbon at Maucieri’s on October 10th.

240 down. 1,200 to go! Let’s keep them coming!

👟 WHAT A TURNOUT!

Our first shoe drop was a huge success! We collected a whole potato box full of shoes!

We’ll tally up the numbers this week, but one thing we already know—we’re going to need MORE SHOES!

Our goal is 1,440 pairs of shoes to create a powerful visual mental health display for our Brisket & Bourbon event at Maucieri's Italian Bistro on October 10th.

Every pair helps us tell a story, start a conversation, and bring awareness to men’s mental health and su***de prevention.

👟 OUR FIRST SHOE DROP IS TOMORROW!
📍 Crosslake City Hall
🗓️ Sunday, September 6
⏰ 10 AM–1 PM

Are your summer shoes done for the season?
Got a pair of golf shoes that have seen one too many rounds?
Did your work shoes finally run their course?
Did your feet hurt at the Fair, so you had to buy a new pair? 😂

Before you toss those old shoes in the trash, swing by City Hall instead!
We’ll take ALL your old shoes!
Every pair of shoes donated will be used in our mental health awareness display at Maucieri’s on October 10th.

While you’re there, meet “Salty” and learn more about his upcoming Walk Across America, beginning in April 2027.
We’ll also have a sign-up sheet for “Salty’s First Mile”—a 1.2-mile walk from Andy’s Bar & Grill to Maucieri’s that will kick off our Brisket & Bourbon event on October 10th!

Help us turn something you no longer need into something that can start a conversation and make a difference. 💚
Bring your shoes. Meet Salty. Sign up for the First Mile. And help us make an impact!

From One Adventure to Another 🛶

Three and a half years ago, we picked up a key piece of Salty’s Mississippi Movement—a beautifully sculpted 17.5-foot Northstar Northwind canoe, made specifically for Travel for a Cure.
We named her “The Salty Walrus,” after Ian’s nickname, “Salty,” and that legendary walrus-style mustache he wears so well. 🦭
The Salty Walrus went on to survive 67 days and more than 2,300 miles on the Mighty Mississippi, carrying Ian and his 13 paddle partners safely from the headwaters at Lake Itasca all the way to the Head of Passes in Venice, Louisiana.

Today, we have the honor of picking up another perfectly sculpted canoe. This time, we’re delivering it to the Friends of the Boundary Waters, helping make another person’s dreams and adventures possible.
We originally planned to donate the Salty Walrus after her grand adventure down the River. But after more than 2,300 miles, she came home with plenty of scratches, bruises, and stories to tell.
So instead, we feel much better knowing that someone will receive a brand-new canoe in honor of the Salty Walrus and the incredible journey she carried us on.

Northstar Canoes has been an incredible partner to Travel for a Cure. Even better, they’re a Minnesota-made company based in Princeton, Minnesota. There’s something pretty special about taking a canoe built in our home state and putting it to work on an adventure like the Mississippi River.
We’re incredibly grateful for their craftsmanship, generosity, and the memories they’ve helped create along the way.

And while the canoe was built for an adventure, Travel for a Cure was built for something bigger.
For more than a decade, we’ve been proud to support the Movember Foundation and its mission to improve men’s health. Through our adventures and events, we hope to raise awareness and start the conversations that can sometimes be difficult to have—about mental health and su***de prevention, prostate cancer, and testicular cancer.
Because sometimes an adventure is more than an adventure. Sometimes it gives us a reason to talk, a reason to connect, and a reason to look out for one another.

The Salty Walrus may have finished her journey down the Mississippi, but the stories of her grand adventure will be told for the rest of our lives.
🛶 One canoe. 2,300+ miles. 67 days. 13 paddle partners. One mighty river.
And now…
another canoe.
another dream.
another adventure begins.

For the conversations that matter. ❤️
