The cochlear implant journey can come with a lot of new terms. This Health Literacy Month, we're making a few of them easier to understand.

Cochlear implant: An implantable device placed under the skin with an external processor. This device enables individuals with hearing loss to perceive speech and sound. A cochlear implant bypasses damaged parts of the ear and sends an electrical signal to stimulate the auditory nerve directly from inside the cochlea.

Residual hearing: The natural hearing a person still has.

Activation: When a cochlear implant is turned on by an audiologist and programmed for the first time.

Mapping: The process of adjusting a cochlear implant's settings to meet an individual's needs.

Rehabilitation: The ongoing process of learning to interpret and make sense of sound with a cochlear implant.

During the surgical step of that journey, you may also hear about robotic-assisted insertion. The iotaSOFT Robotic-Assisted Insertion System is designed to provide a controlled and consistent approach to cochlear implant electrode insertion because the cochlea is a delicate structure, and how the electrode is inserted matters.

For the past 19 years, Emily Klemp, AuD, has dedicated her career to helping people reconnect with the sounds and moments that matter most. Today, she brings that same patient-first perspective to her role at iotaMotion, helping bring the voice of the audiologist into the development of cochlear implant technology.

Emily believes audiologists are essential to successful cochlear implant outcomes—not only through programming and testing, but by understanding each patient's goals, setting realistic expectations, and providing ongoing support. "Every cochlear implant journey is unique," she says. "Our role is to provide the expertise and guidance that helps patients maximize their outcomes, but success is truly a partnership."

For Cooper’s family, finding the right care meant asking questions, exploring options, and staying open to new possibilities. After progressive hearing loss and a first cochlear implant, their search for answers led them to Cincinnati Children's. There, Cooper became the first child at the hospital, and in Ohio, to undergo robotic-assisted cochlear implant surgery with iotaSOFT.

“We are always trying to figure out not only what's the best standard of care, but what's going to be the next best standard of care that we should be delivering for kids,” said Dr. Daniel Choo, pediatric otolaryngologist and cochlear implant surgeon at Cincinnati Children’s.
