Dilators: When We Use Them… and When We Don’t 💗

Dilators can be a helpful pelvic health tool—but they aren’t the answer for everyone. ✨
At Pelvic Balance PT, we use them when the goal is to gradually improve tissue mobility, tolerance, and vaginal opening—such as with hormonal changes, radiation-related tissue changes, narrowing, scar tissue, or certain types of pe*******on pain.
But here’s the important part 👇
The goal isn’t to “push through” pain.
It’s to teach your body:
💗 This can be safe.
🌱 This can be gradual.
✨ This doesn’t have to hurt.
🙌 My body can learn comfort again.
And while dilators have their place, we often prefer pelvic wands when the bigger issue is pelvic floor muscle tension, trigger points, nerve sensitivity, scar tissue, connective tissue restrictions, or surrounding pelvic tissue restrictions.
Think of it this way:
Dilators = graded opening & tolerance
Pelvic wands = targeted tissue & muscle work
Neither is “better.” The right tool depends on your symptoms, your tissues, and your goals. 💗
Pelvic tools should build confidence—not fear.
Save this post if you’ve ever wondered, “Do I really need dilators?” 👇

Holding your breath during plyometrics can create unnecessary pressure through your core and pelvic floor. Instead, keep your breath moving. 💨

Try a long, controlled inhale as you prepare, followed by an elongated exhale as you jump, land, or absorb impact.
This can help:
💜 Manage intra-abdominal pressure
💜 Reduce excessive pelvic floor strain
💜 Improve core coordination
💜 Keep your body relaxed and responsive

Your breathing doesn’t have to match every repetition perfectly—the goal is to avoid bracing so hard that you hold your breath.

Experiencing leakage, pressure, heaviness, or pain with jumping? A pelvic floor physical therapist can help you return to impact with more confidence.

Does breastfeeding affect bone density? 🦴🤱

A new systematic review and meta-analysis found that bone mineral density may temporarily decrease during lactation—particularly at the lumbar spine and femoral neck.

The reassuring news?
💜 Bone density generally returned close to early-postpartum levels after weaning or by approximately 12–18 months postpartum.

Longer lactation, especially beyond six months, was associated with greater temporary bone loss and a longer recovery timeline. However, this is not a reason to stop breastfeeding or avoid exercise.

Postpartum exercise remains beneficial. The key is to return to running, jumping, and other high-impact activities gradually—with consideration for nutrition, energy availability, previous stress fractures, baseline bone health, and changes in training volume.

If you’re having difficulty incorporating exercise postpartum or experiencing symptoms with exercise, reach out to a pelvic floor physical therapist for individualized support. 💜

🎣 We Teach You to Fish: Pelvic PT Edition
Pelvic PT isn’t about making you dependent on treatment forever. 💚
We may use tools like a pelvic treatment wand to help you safely understand and work with your own pelvic tissues at home — because the goal is for you to become confident in your own care. 🙌
And pelvic tissues aren’t just muscles! 👀 They can include:
✨ Pelvic floor muscles
✨ Fascia & connective tissue
✨ Trigger points
✨ Nerve-sensitive areas
✨ Scar tissue & restrictions
✨ Tissue mobility & blood flow
✨ Your nervous system’s response to touch, pressure, and movement
This type of treatment can be helpful for both women and men experiencing pelvic pain, painful s*x, urinary or bowel symptoms, tailbone pain, prostatitis/CPPS, postpartum or post-surgical restrictions, endometriosis-related pain, and more.
But here’s the BIG idea: 🧠
We don’t just do treatment TO you.
We teach you what we’re feeling, help you understand what your body is doing, and show you how to safely support your tissues between visits. 💪
Because long-term progress takes more than passive treatment.
It takes education. 📚
Confidence. 💚
Body awareness. 🧠
And knowing what to do when symptoms flare. 🔥
At Pelvic Balance PT, we like to say:
🎣 We don’t just catch the fish for you.
We teach you how to fish.
Your body isn’t broken.
Your symptoms aren’t “all in your head.”
And with the right education and guidance, your body can learn to feel safer and move better. 🌿

✨ Stop letting your pelvis do all the work! ✨

If your pelvis is rolling backward during exercises like clamshells, you may be getting more movement from your hips and lower back than from the muscles you're actually trying to strengthen. 👀

🤲 Try placing a hand on the side of your pelvis as feedback while performing the exercise.
Then think about a small posterior pelvic tilt (gently tucking your tailbone) to help stabilize your pelvis and reduce unwanted compensation.

💜 The goal isn't a perfectly still pelvis—it's improving awareness so your glute muscles can do more of the work.

This simple cue can make exercises like clamshells more effective and help build better hip and pelvic control.
