Open the case and you’re looking at the entire working system. Seven tips, four geometries, because each one does a different job:
→ Cylindrical — ST100, ST120
→ Conical — ST200, ST220, ST240
→ Chisel — ST700
→ Side firing — ST900 Plus the tips holder, the handpiece mirror and the handpiece tool.

Tip geometry is the part that gets underestimated. Spot size and beam direction decide what a pulse actually does when it lands — a conical tip concentrating energy into a small area is a different instrument from a chisel laying it along an edge, and a side-firing tip is a different instrument again, even though the laser behind all three hasn’t changed.

Choosing the tip is most of choosing the procedure. And the line printed on the case is there for a reason: laser tips must be sterilized prior to use. Every time.

Every argument about dental lasers eventually comes back to one graph.

Absorption decides where a laser's energy goes. A wavelength that tissue absorbs weakly travels into it and spreads out. A wavelength that tissue absorbs strongly stops at the surface and does its work there.

Er:YAG sits at 2,940 nm — the peak of water absorption, and the highest of the wavelengths used in dentistry. On the chart that's the difference between a spike and a flat line.

Which is why SAPPHIRE cuts the way it does. Every tissue in a tooth holds water. The pulse lands, the water in that spot absorbs the energy almost instantly, and the expansion does the cutting. Because absorption is that strong, the energy is spent in a thin surface layer instead of travelling onward into whatever is underneath.

The precision isn't a setting you dial in. It's where the wavelength sits on this curve.

Uncovering an implant is a procedure where the margin for error is set by the hardware, not the tissue. Work a blade millimeters from titanium and the risk is obvious — a scratched implant surface is a surface you’d rather patients never had.

The Er:YAG handles that through physics rather than technique. Soft tissue ablates at a far lower threshold than the metal does, so at settings that remove tissue cleanly, the fixture underneath is effectively left alone. Fast, precise uncovering, with the thing you’re working around not being the thing you’re worried about.

The same wavelength takes on the harder case as well: contaminated implants in peri-implantitis, where conventional instrumentation struggles to reach the threads at all. Implant dentistry, in the everyday clinic.

The eggshell test is one of the best demos in laser dentistry. An eggshell is about as close to enamel as you get outside a mouth — brittle, curved, with a membrane underneath that punishes any loss of control. Which makes it a fair question to put to an Er:YAG: can you take the shell and leave what’s behind it?

At ALD 2026, Dr. Pilar Blanco (.pilarblanco) put the SAPPHIRE handpiece in a colleague’s hand and let him answer that for himself. That’s the part worth noticing — not the demo, the handoff. You can watch someone else operate a laser all day and still learn nothing about what it feels like to use one. Thirty seconds holding it yourself tells you whether the handpiece is balanced, whether the screen makes sense, whether you’d trust it near a margin.
