Our landscaping crew has four legs and a healthy appetite.

Each year, we partner with local goat herders to help create defensible space around our communities. Goats naturally graze on grasses, shrubs, leaves, and other vegetation, providing an eco-friendly alternative to traditional landscaping equipment.

Not only do they help reduce fire risk, but they also reduce noise and air pollution while bringing plenty of smiles to residents and team members alike.

Have you ever seen goats at work?

One of the biggest things older adults want in retirement is simple: choice.

At The Sequoias, residents have access to a variety of classes, groups, and services that support independence while making it easy to stay active, connected, and engaged.

From balance classes, tai chi, tap dancing, and art, to knitting groups, writers circles, meditation, technology support, and coffee with friends, there are plenty of opportunities to explore interests old and new.

Because retirement isn't about slowing down. It's about having the freedom to choose how you spend your day.

Fresh produce, friendly conversations, and a beautiful day spent with community.
Last week, residents at Viamonte at Walnut Creek enjoyed a Farmers Market right on campus, bringing neighbors together to shop, connect, and enjoy the season.

Meanwhile, The Tamalpais Marin team spent the day at the Bon Air Center Spring Fair in Greenbrae, meeting local residents and sharing what makes community living so special.

Whether on campus or out in the community, these moments remind us that meaningful connections are at the heart of healthy, joyful aging.

Memorial Day is set aside to honor the men and women who died in military service — a solemn day that asks more of us than a long weekend.

A lesser-known, but powerful tradition expresses that meaning without needing many words: the flag is flown at half‑staff from morning until noon on Memorial Day, then raised to full‑staff for the remainder of the day.

Before noon, the flag's posture represents mourning — remembrance of those who made the ultimate sacrifice. At noon, the flag rises again as a symbol of the living carrying their memory forward: a collective commitment not to let their sacrifice be in vain, but to “rise up in their stead.”

The day also holds space for families — the spouses, parents, children, and friends who live with an absence that doesn’t end when the calendar turns. Their remembrance is not seasonal; it is daily.

If you’re able, let this tradition be a small prompt: notice the flag, pause for a moment, and reflect on the cost behind what we often take for granted — and on how we can live with greater care, courage, and gratitude in return.

On May 8, our Resident Service Coordinators (RSCs), along with team members from our senior center locations, participated in mediation training to strengthen communication and conflict resolution skills.

From connecting residents to helpful resources to supporting older adults and people with disabilities through life’s challenges, our RSCs help residents stay independent, supported, and connected to their community.

We are so grateful for their dedication, heart, and continued commitment to learning and growth in service of others.

Connection across generations and communities is part of our mission in action.

Recently, residents from enjoyed a meaningful visit to the San Francisco Senior Center, led by Saundra, Director of San Francisco Senior Center locations, and her team.

Many residents shared how moved they were to learn more about the Downtown Senior Center’s impact and Sequoia Living’s involvement in supporting older adults throughout San Francisco.

Hearing directly from participants and their personal stories left a lasting impression on everyone who attended.

It was a powerful reminder that community extends far beyond one building, it’s about creating connection, support, and belonging across The City.

Never Stop Laughing.
Sandra is a new Sequoian at Viamonte at Walnut Creek. When asked what she hopes to never stop doing as she ages, her answer was simple: laughing.

She joined the community for what matters most to her: meeting new people and doing new things.

In retirement, life shifts from questions like “what time is my next meeting?” and “how much traffic is on my way to work?” to more meaningful questions, like:
▪️ What brings me joy?
▪️ What do I want to learn?
▪️ How do I want to contribute?
▪️ Who do I want to spend time with?

There’s freedom in rediscovering yourself after closing the chapter on your career.

For most of our lives, our identity is tied to our work. Our pride, standards, and achievements can be neatly wrapped up and delivered in response to the question, “What do you do?” Not to mention the byproducts work creates—relationships, goals, and structure—provided by a work environment.
