Fourteen UCSF Fein Memory and Aging Center faculty are included in the newly released Stanford/Elsevier database of highly cited scientists, which measures research citation impact across scientific fields.

Among nearly 380,000 researchers classified in Neurology & Neurosurgery, William Seeley, MD, ranked No. 88 for 2025 citation impact, Gil Rabinovici, MD, ranked No. 154 and Bruce Miller, MD, ranked No. 275. Miller also ranked No. 149 in the career-long analysis.

The database uses a composite of standardized citation indicators and should not be interpreted as a ranking of overall scientific quality. Still, the representation of 14 Fein MAC faculty highlights the reach and citation impact of research across our center.

Today we mourn the loss of Sir Patrick Stewart, an extraordinary actor whose voice, presence, intelligence and humanity reached generations.

For many, he will forever be Captain Jean-Luc Picard, a leader who showed that strength could look like curiosity, compassion, dignity and respect. For others, he was Professor Charles Xavier or the Shakespearean actor whose remarkable stage career spanned decades.

With the news of his death came another revelation: Stewart had been living with Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia.

For those of us working to understand neurodegenerative disease and support people living with dementia and their families, that news carries particular weight.

Lewy body dementia can be difficult to recognize and understand. Behind every diagnosis is a person, and a family, navigating profound changes while the person they love remains so much more than a disease.

Patrick Stewart spent a lifetime helping audiences see the humanity in others. We can honor that legacy by bringing the same compassion and dignity to people living with dementia and to the families and caregivers who walk alongside them.

As Horatio says in Shakespeare’s “Hamlet,” “Good night, sweet prince.”

Rest in peace, Sir Patrick.

What does having a safe place to live have to do with brain health?

Having a stable place to live can help protect our health as we age by making it easier to get restful sleep, eat nutritious meals, manage health conditions, get care and feel less stressed. Housing instability can put all of these under pressure.

This Wednesday in Berkeley, filmmaker and Atlantic Fellow Luca Capponi brings us close to the human experience behind those conditions in his documentary Like Heaven Without God.

Shot entirely in a parking lot near the Berkeley Marina, the film follows five Berkeley residents living in a homeless RV community. Temporarily sheltered through a public program, they face the uncertainty of what comes next.

Capponi’s work explores migration, displacement, and belonging, telling stories from the margins with patience and care.
