Have you ever reached the end of the day and felt like your voice was just…done? 🗣️💙

Maybe it gets raspy after hours of meetings.
Maybe speaking starts to feel like work.
Maybe you’re constantly clearing your throat, struggling to project, or noticing that your voice just doesn’t sound or feel like it used to...

We ask a lot of our voices every day:
💻 Meetings & video calls
📞 Phone conversations
🎤 Presentations
👩‍🏫 Teaching
🎶 Singing
🍽️ Talking in noisy restaurants
💬 And all the everyday conversations in between

But persistent hoarseness, vocal fatigue, strain, weakness, or changes in your voice shouldn’t always be something you simply “push through.”

And here’s something many people don’t realize:
🌷 Speech therapy isn’t just for children.

Speech-language pathologists also work with adults experiencing voice and communication challenges. Voice therapy can help support more comfortable, efficient voice use based on each person’s individual needs and goals.

If your voice has changed or speaking regularly feels difficult or exhausting, it may be worth finding out why. Persistent voice changes should also be evaluated by an appropriate medical professional to help determine what may be contributing to them.

✨ Your voice helps you work, connect, advocate, laugh, teach, lead, and tell your story.
It deserves care, too.

📖 We’re taking a deeper look at vocal fatigue and voice changes in adults in our newest blog:

Want to support your child’s language development at home?

The good news: you don’t need flash cards, complicated activities, or hours of extra practice.

Some of the most powerful language-building opportunities are already happening during everyday moments—playing, reading, eating, getting dressed and simply spending time together.

Try these 4 simple strategies:

👀 FOLLOW what interests your child
💬 RESPOND to their communication attempts
➕ ADD a little more language to what they say
⏸️ PAUSE and give them time to take another turn

New research continues to support caregiver-coached approaches that help families build communication skills naturally within daily routines.

And remember: a communication “turn” doesn’t have to be a perfectly spoken word. A look, point, gesture, sound, sign, or short phrase can all be meaningful communication.

💙 Small moments can create big opportunities for language growth.

🎒 School is back in session and now that the first-day excitement is settling down, parents may start noticing something else:

How is your child communicating at school? 💬

The classroom places a lot of new demands on communication. Children are expected to:

✨ Follow multi-step directions
✨ Ask teachers for help
✨ Answer questions
✨ Tell stories about what happened
✨ Learn new classroom vocabulary
✨ Join conversations and activities
✨ Navigate friendships
✨ Speak up when they’re confused, uncomfortable, or need a break

For some children, the first few weeks back at school can make speech or language challenges easier to notice...especially when they’re communicating with new teachers & classmates.

A few things to listen for at home:

🌷Is your child able to tell you what happened during their day?

🌷Can they explain when something went wrong?

🌷Do they know what to say when they don’t understand a direction?

🌷Are they frequently frustrated because others don’t understand them?

🌷Are they avoiding talking about school or participating with peers?

💕One of our favorite tips: instead of asking only “How was school?”, try something more specific:

“What made you laugh today?”
“Was anything confusing?”
“Who did you talk to?”
“What was something new you learned?”
“Did you need help with anything?”

Those little conversations can tell you a lot. 🫶

And remember: children don’t need perfect speech or instant confidence to succeed at school. They need meaningful ways to communicate, supportive adults who listen and opportunities to feel heard & understood.

If the start of the school year has raised questions about your child’s speech, language, fluency, social communication, or communication confidence, tuLIPS Speech Therapy is here to help.

BACK-TO-SCHOOL COMMUNICATION READINESS 🎒💬

Back-to-school season is just around the corner and with students returning next month, now is the perfect time to help your child feel more confident and prepared.

New teachers, routines, classrooms and classmates can bring new communication demands. Children may need to follow directions, ask for help, join conversations, tell stories, and clearly express what they need throughout the school day.

Families can begin practicing now by:

💙 Using simple one- and two-step directions
💙 Practicing helpful phrases like, “Can you help me?”
💙 Retelling a recent experience using first, next, and last
💙 Pausing and giving children enough time to process and respond
💙 Celebrating their effort—not just perfect answers

The goal is not perfect speech. It is helping children feel confident, understood, and ready to participate in the classroom.

WAIT AND SEE—OR CHECK IN? 💬

Many parents notice something about their child’s communication but hesitate to seek support.

They may wonder:

“Will they grow out of it?”
“Am I worrying too soon?”
“Should I wait until school starts?”
“What if they don’t qualify for services?”

A speech therapy consultation does not automatically mean your child needs ongoing therapy. It can simply help you better understand what you are noticing, identify your child’s strengths, and decide whether support, monitoring, or an evaluation may be appropriate.

It may be helpful to check in when your child:

• Is frequently difficult to understand
• Becomes frustrated when trying to communicate
• Has trouble following everyday directions
• Uses fewer words or shorter sentences than expected
• Regularly stutters or avoids speaking
• Struggles to tell stories or explain what happened
• Has difficulty joining conversations or playing with peers
• Has lost communication skills they previously used

You do not need to wait until communication difficulties become overwhelming.

At tuLIPS Speech Therapy, we provide personalized speech therapy in San Francisco for children, teens, adults, and families. We also serve Piedmont and surrounding Bay Area communities, with virtual speech therapy options available across California.

Have you been wondering whether speech therapy could help you or someone you love?

Speech therapy supports much more than speech sounds. It can help with language development, stuttering and fluency, voice concerns, social communication, word finding, and communication changes after illness, stroke, or injury.

At tuLIPS Speech Therapy in San Francisco, we provide personalized support for children, teens, adults, and seniors who want to communicate with more confidence in everyday life.

Sometimes the signs are easy to recognize. Other times, they show up slowly through frustration, difficulty being understood, trouble finding the right words, or feeling less confident in conversations.

Speech therapy may help with:

✨ Speech sounds and clarity
✨ Language development and understanding
✨ Stuttering and fluency
✨ Voice concerns
✨ Social communication
✨ Communication after illness, stroke, or injury
✨ Executive functioning and communication organization

There is no one-size-fits-all approach. Some clients benefit from in-person support, while others thrive with the flexibility of virtual therapy from home. The right therapy plan should be personalized, practical, and built around real communication needs.

Speech therapy is not just about pronunciation — it’s about helping people feel heard, understood, connected, and empowered in daily life.

Communication shapes how children connect, learn, express themselves and build confidence. National Speech-Language-Hearing Month is a reminder of how important early support can be.

Many parents wonder whether their child’s communication development is on track. While every child develops differently, some common signs a child may benefit from speech therapy include:

• delayed speech milestones
• unclear pronunciation
• difficulty following directions
• frustration when trying to communicate
• trouble combining words or expressing ideas clearly
• stuttering or repetition of sounds
• challenges with social communication

Speech therapy may help support:
💙 speech sounds
💙 language development
💙 social communication
💙 apraxia
💙 fluency challenges like stuttering

One of the most important messages of National Speech-Language-Hearing Month is the value of early identification and intervention, because early support can make a meaningful difference in communication, emotional confidence, academic success, and social development.

Parents often ask what therapy actually looks like. For many children, sessions are engaging, interactive, and play-based while still being highly individualized to their goals and needs. Therapy may include:
✨ games and language-building activities
✨ modeling and repetition
✨ social communication support
✨ parent coaching and home strategies

Speech-language pathologists work closely with families to create supportive, personalized care that helps children thrive both at home and in everyday life.

If your child seems difficult to understand, frustrated while communicating, or behind in speech and language development, trust your instincts. Early support matters. 💬

💙 May is National Speech-Language-Hearing Month — a time dedicated to raising awareness about communication challenges, hearing health and the life-changing impact of speech therapy and early support.

More than 40 million Americans experience speech, language, voice, swallowing, or hearing difficulties, and many people are surprised to learn how broad the scope of speech therapy really is.

At tuLIPS Speech Therapy in San Francisco, we support children, teens, and adults with communication goals including:
✨ speech sound disorders
✨ language delays and processing challenges
✨ stuttering and fluency
✨ social communication
✨ voice concerns

• difficulty being understood
• delayed speech or language development
• frustration during communication
• stuttering that occurs regularly
• trouble organizing or expressing thoughts clearly
