Burnout usually builds slowly, which is a big part of why it’s easy to miss. It often shows up in ordinary ways first, like a two-line email that sits in your drafts all afternoon, or days off that go to catching up on rest.
The World Health Organization describes burnout as the result of ongoing work stress that hasn’t been managed. It tends to show up in three ways: feeling worn out, feeling more distant from work that used to matter, and finding that everyday tasks take more effort than they used to.
That matters, because it means burnout comes from the conditions someone is working in. It says nothing about how capable or committed they are.
If a few of these signs sound familiar, they’re worth taking seriously, even if your week still looks manageable from the outside. If you’d like support, Meru Health brings together a licensed therapist and short daily practices in one 12-week program. We’re here whenever you’re ready.
